Please do me a favour and download this

http://rapidshare.com/files/159399621/001An_American_Prayer_Album.mp3.html

It's one of the rarest Doors albums of all, An American Prayer.

I wonder if you have the attention span to listen to the whole thing. Do you ?

Surely Jim Morrison is king when it comes to Lyrics. If he isn't then please tell me otherwise ... and even then, I'd laugh at you :)

Still, without Lyrics, there is no band. Lyrics ARE the song. Lyrics ARE the band... We need great golden copulations ...

ok then smartarses, name better lyrics or lyricists :)

Not saying the greatest of all time, but in my opinion, Axl Rose is one of the best. Estranged, November Rain, Sweet Child O Mine...brilliant.

Shame about the new album though.

Nick Cave has been responsible for some utterly brilliant lyrics. twisted gothic parables, beautifully introspective love songs, and some hilariously pitch-black satire. Too many songs I could mention here to pick one of them out, although "God is in the House" always cracks me up:

We've laid the cables and the wires
We've split the wood and stoked
the fires
We've lit our town so there is no
Place for crime to hide
Our little church is painted white
And in the safety of the night
We all go quiet as a mouse
For the word is out
God is in the house
God is in the house
God is in the house
No cause for worry now
God is in the house

Moral sneaks in the White House
Computer geeks in the school house
Drug freaks in the crack house
We don't have that stuff here
We have a tiny little Force
But we need them of course
For the kittens in the trees
And at night we are on our knees
As quiet as a mouse
For God is in the house
God is in the house
God is in the house
And no one's left in doubt
God is in the house

Homos roaming the streets in packs
Queer bashers with tyre-jacks
Lesbian counter-attacks
That stuff is for the big cities
Our town is very pretty
We have a pretty little square
We have a woman for a mayor
Our policy is firm but fair
Now that God is in the house
God is in the house
God is in the house
Any day now He'll come out
God is in the house

Well-meaning little therapists
Goose-stepping twelve-stepping Tetotalitarianists
The tipsy, the reeling and the drop down pissed
We got no time for that stuff here
Zero crime and no fear
We've bred all our kittens white
So you can see them in the night
And at night we're on our knees
As quiet as a mouse
Since the word got out
From the North down to the South
For no-one's left in doubt
There's no fear about
If we all hold hands and very quietly shout
Hallelujah
God is in the house
God is in the house
Oh I wish He would come out
God is in the house

Surely it's silverchair

"No more maybes, the baby's got rabies."

And who can forget:

"There's no bathroom and there is no sink,
The water out of the tap is very ... hard to drink!"

So very, very, very .... crap.

NOFX have some pretty good lyrics on white trash two heebs and a bean

Soul Doubt

Sometimes I feel my life is going 'round in circles
Beneath my eyes are bluish black
There's nothing new, no one I wanna talk to
Nothing I wanna think about, I got soul doubt
I stick My head out of the window, when it's closed
Instead of air, I get glass stuck in to my head
The city's sounding, and I can't seem to stop the pounding
Can't keep my thoughts from flying 'round
Can't keep my thoughts from flying 'round
Not sure what I am thinking about, I got soul doubt
A shameless display, wearing a smile full of pain
A frameless Erte, a painting without a signature
She's waiting for someone to save her
As I pass her by I see Cinderella
She dosen't fit into the slipper
Like she fits in a bottle of liquor
There's no one to take her away
Her eyes meet mine, she sees right through me
The question is asked, Whatcha' gonna do for me?
I don't want nothin', just a connection
I gotta know what she's all about
Cause I know she's been there
Soul doubt
I stick my head out of the window once again
This time I see a thousand faces all too clear
They wear the same expression, I've seen in my face
So many times, I know exactly how they feel
I know exactly how they feel
I know just what they think about
They've got soul doubt

Warm

One more time for Ho Jo, you know I can't wait
Another wasted line
I'm sittin' in the corner, I can feel the weight
Of my head on top of my spine
There's nothing to be scared of once you've
Seen the the light, reflecting through the screen
A eudaemonistic life composed of tar and nicotine
You know it, You know it, You know it
'Cause you've seen it, now you believe it
You know it because it seems so real
You know it because you've seen it, now you believe it
You know it because it seems so real
It seems so real, It seems so real, It seems so real
Sit back and relax and do nothin',na,na,na,na
You'll laugh, then you'll cry, then you'll feel nothin',na,na,na,na
Implanted images of morality
Images of life, they seem so real
One more time for Ho Jo, what does it mean?
I'm not sure I know, while looking for somebody
Deep inside a dream, my sunshine turns to snow
Now it's blowin' inside, I don't feel the cold
Yet I'm frozen to my seat
My eyes have seen the truth
And still my mind admits defeat

A few other Cave gems:

"I'm a bad mother-f****r don't you know
and I'll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get to one fat boys asshole"

"Neighbours!" I cried,
"Freinds!" I screamed,
I banged my fist across the bar
I bear no grudge against you
and my dick felt long and hard
"I am the man for which no god waits
But for which the whole world yearns!
AndI'm marked by darkness and by blood
And by one thousand powder burns"

"I hear stories from ther chamber
Christ was born into a manger
And like some ragged stranger died upon the cross
and might I say it seems so fitting in it's way
he was a carpenter by trade
or at least thats what I'm told"

I quite enjoy some sarah blasko songs, they seem to be well written

Read somewhere that Bernard Fannings favourite lyricist was Jay Whalley, frenzal rhomb singer, because of how well he could tell a story

Speaking of which, Paul Kelly is brilliant.

The Man I Killed - NOFX - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=118519670

When they tightly strap me in, give me lethal injection,
Just a few moments to live, no remorse for what I did,
It was for the betterment of man, I gave the utmost sacrifice,
Before more damage could be done I took his life.

There was a split second of silence when the dart punctured the skin,
Beady eyes rolled back in head, body dropped from the poison,
They could incapacitate me, but could not erase my sneer,
I heard a thousand people screaming, while three billion others cheered,
He was gone, and I would soon be...

Executed by the state, all appeals would be in vain,
I was not criminally insane, in fact, I was found to be,
An otherwise caring and respectable member of society,
A minor threat, except for that one man I killed.

As the sedatives take effect, I just smile and close my eyes,
There's a priest kneeling next to me, he asks me if I realize,
I was going straight to hell, and he thought that I should know,
That the man I killed's replacement planned this whole scenario,
And what I did had no significance at all.
