GROUP ONE
1. DR. HANNIBAL LECTER (Anthony Hopkins) in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Before seeing Lecter in action, not many had heard of a fava bean or chianti with a side of brain. The thing about the good doctor is that not only was he creepy, he was also brilliantly devious. Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for for what is considered as one of the greatest film performances ever.
The incredible thing about Dr. Hannibal Lecter is that despite ONLY 16 minutes of on-screen time (hard to believe), he manages to be more chilling than the arguably more insane Buffalo Bill (brilliantly played bu underrated actor Ted Levine).
This character made the number one spot in the AFI award. Will he do the same in the LU poll?
2. T-1000 (Robert Patrick) in TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (Tri-Star, 1991)
The role of Robert Patrick's career. He was absolutely born to play this role (and this role only). The guy is wallowing away in B-movie purgatory, but he can sleep comfortably at night, knowing that Arnie's T-800 character didn't make the AFI's top 50 list and he did.
THe AFI made the right choice with Robert Patrick. We really believe that the T-1000 is an unstoppable killing machine. He blends in like a chameleon, unlike the T-800's hulk. He is a 'killing machine' with the ultimate skills of mimicry for infiltration of human society.
I'd back the T-1000 to tear the so-called superior model T-X (Terminator 3 villain) a new asshole. The cyborgs should have sent another T-1000 model to kill John Connor instead of the dumb blonde model.
3. EVE HARRINGTON (Anne Baxter) in ALL ABOUT EVE (20th Century Fox, 1950)
I haven't seen this movie, but I had to add this top 50 role. Unfairly overlooked all these years by the flashier posturings of Bette Davis, Baxter does a beautiful job of drawing initial pathos then panic as she slowly unveils her own lethal stinger. By film's end, Baxter is directly on par with her scenery-chewing co-star. Similar theme to "The Fan".
4. "BABY" JANE HUDSON (Bette Davis) in WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (Warner Bros., 1962)
Bette Davis' most infamous role. The story is about Baby Jane Hudson, a former child Vaudeville star who has now grown older and been shyed away from the spotlight and attention that she so dearly loved. Baby Jane has a sister, Blanche, who is now crippled and restrained to a wheelchair. But before becoming immobile, Blanche was once a movie queen herself, and she incidentally pushed her sister out of the spotlight, which ignited extreme jealousy from Baby Jane.
This role was the inspiration for the Kathy Bates character in MISERY.
THE JOKER (Jack Nicholson) in BATMAN (Warner Bros., 1989)
Who else but Jack Nicholson could cause the actor playing Batman to get second billing in a movie titled Batman?
Batman is a pretty bad-ass character on his own. BTW, in time, I think Michael Keaton will regret leaving this franchise. It's not everyday you get a normal guy and have to seriously think about how many ways he could potentially kick Superman's ass. So to go toe-to-toe with Batman, it takes a crazily insane and whacked out mind. None took to the task better than Jack Nicholson's Joker.
The most definitive move of the movie came when Joker pulled the biggest pistol in the history of man from his pants, to shoot down Batman's glider. It's said that Robin found this particularly kinky.
Hopefully, Heath Ledger's Joker will be just as good.
