To be honest I have learnt a lot about David Smith from this press conference. This is the type of interview/press conference that the ARLC should have had Smith do sometime ago. While I have read newspaper articles about him and seen snippets of him speak on TV this is the first time I have seen him speak live and for a lengthy period time.
He obviously knows his limitations and realises he can't do everything himself. So he has, and is bringing in the right people to help him.
Still not sure he is the right person for the job. But I think more highly of him then I did pre-conference.
To give a shortish summary:
NRL executive structure has be overhauled and streamlined into 7 different areas. Shape and organisation of the structure discussed with commission, Smith making the appointments himself
Units -
Head of Football - Todd Greenberg
Cheif Operations Officer- Jim Doyle
Cheif Financial Officer - To be filled
Head of Strategy & Investment - Shane Mattiske
Head of Commercial - Paul Kind
Head of Marketing, Digital and Content - To be filled
Head of Corporate Affairs & Community - To be filled
There are also high level position within these divisions to be filled
Paul Kind has had Marketing taken off him
Nathan McGuirk, Ian Schubert and John Brady seem to be demoted
Smith & Greenberg very impressive at the press conference. Greenberg systematically ruled out any discontent between clubs and NRL.
Landmark day for the ARLC, fantastic appointments so far.
Auditors won't be looking into Belmores books then.

agreed
the kind of setup Gallop should have implemented years ago
Did he have the $ to do that?

And unity at the top. Gallop was on a hiding to nothing - IMHO he did well holding it all together. When the ARLC came in they instantly became unified at the top, and cut Gallop simply because he evolved into being something that could not operate under the new regime.betcats said:I'm no Gallop fan but there is no denying that the ARLC has a lot more money to play with then Gallop ever had.
His job isn't to do everything himself, it has nothing to do with limitations. It's about creating a diverse, balanced and highly skilled team who each know their roles intimately to get the job done.
As a CEO that is probably his main job, to oversee all of this. It isn't to be at the beck and call of the media and have his face all over TV everyday like Gallop.
Now we'll most likely see different executive take responsibility for different issues that concern them directly, just like it should be. I mean, how many people on here know what Nathan McGuirk looks or sounds like, despite him holding the Football/Operations role? I've probably only ever heard or seen him once or twice.
