Wondering if someone could fill me in on the Greg Smith story.
From what I can gather some yank convinced Wok Ryan he could play and got a start in the top grade to run a complete stuff in his first game.
Surely not true. Coaching crew couldnt be that incompetent???
I,m only reading between the lines from forum comments and sounds like an interesting yarn.

I think you'll find the guy that convinced him was Greg Smith himself. He brought an NFL team sheet to a trial and Ryan gave him a go. He made it through and eventually got a 1st grade game. The press then questioned his qualifications, Smith produced the team sheet, but wasn't enough for the hounds. There's still debate on whether he had a short term contract or just took the actual field in trial games in the states.

But the myth of him faking everything will go on.

The 'Philadelphia Flier', Greg Smith, does have a bit more to him than that.
He convinced Wok that he had been a pro grid iron player and he did a whole off season of training with the team and proved to be the fastest player we had ever had (faster than Albert) and a supreme athlete in the training sessions.
His first game was a poor effort, but I think the club would have kept him for the season and maybe trained him up to be a top winger except for the fact that journalists decided to check out his story of having been a pro gridiron player, which turned out to be a porky, so he had to leave the club because he had embarressed all by telling lies.
He proved in training that he could tackle and that he was an outstanding athlete, but he had no idea of positonal play and was very shaky under a high ball in his first game. I believe he would have improved if given the chance, maybe to firstgrade standard, maybe not, but we will never know because he blew his chance by lieing about his past.
