Those in the know have commented that he is a totally different person and player to what he was those years ago, I can't think of any other reason why other than the profesionalism and influence from the Eastern suburbs management that have got him to where he is.

Maybe it's just he is back where he loves to play. He did very little at Easts for 3 years and now since he's back at Parra he's been on fire since game 1.

I remmember a game where he (EG Snr) took the ball from the kick off, beat about 12 players (some twice) ran the full lenght of the field down the left hand touch line and scored.

Did it all on his own.

A very memorable try. I forget who the opposition was.

Twiz,

Don't know for sure, but you might be thinking of the day against the Roosters, at Parra Stadium, about '87 or '88.
Roosters had a penalty kick at goal, it went wide but didn't go dead, and Guru caught it behind the tryline. He then ran 105 metres to score, after beating many players. It was down the Cronin Stand touchline. I got my season ticket value that year with just one try.

Eric Grothe snr was the greatest winger you will ever see. Who would ever forget that try v Canterbury, from a tap he just tore through the forwards and scored. Grothe was unstoppable. Young Eric is a reflection of the old man, but with the hair and beard, and that low running action coming toward an opposition winger at 100mph - awesome.

I remember a scene from the 1982 GF. Greame Eadie puts in a towering clearing kick. Lazy old Guru trots back, finds that he isn't going to make it, so he puts on the speed, reaches out with ONE hand, and takes the ball on the full. keeping speed, he wheels around, and ploughs back through the Manly forwards, before being tackles roughly where Eadie had kicked from. I think 3 rucks later, Ronny Hilditch dives over. Try and premiership Parramatta.

The one thing I am yet to se of Guru Jnr is the blistering diagonal run to cut down to the opposition winger on the far side in a try saver. They supreme moments in Rugby League - moments of pure genius. They reckon Guru would never let anyone clock him at top speed. No one ever knew how fast he was.

Aahh, the memories!

I'll take your Eric Grothe and trade you one Ken Irvine but as for the most damaging and hardest to stop... No one beats the Guru!

I think it was a GF but it may have been a final, Eric has the ball and is hareing down the touchline with one bloke to beat - Graham Eadie. Wombat was about the best defensive fullback I can remember and he put the best hit on Eric that I have ever seen. Guru was about a foot in from the touchlineand he did not move an inch. He scored in the corner and when you consider that Eadie was a big solid man too it was a huge try....
