Grothe's attitude adjustment

If Eric can find career best form in 2009 we will be a top 4 team. Mark my words.

If Eric is true to his word (which I think he is!) I look forward to cheering him on in 2009!!

However DA must work with him on slide defence. Would love to see EGJ slide defend and put his opponents over the sideline instead of his standard up and in defensive style.

The winger rushing in in defence was something Hagan coached EGJ and others to do. He made specific mention of it after we beat Canberra in the wet on a Sat night in his first season in an awful game.

Williams would be great on one wing with Grothe on the other. That would be a phenomenal combination and would cover our lack of go forward in the pack tremendously.

I'd be getting rid of any of the other non-wingers we have had played on the wing at times this season first.

EGJ has been doing that since before Hagan arrived. Maybe Hagan tried to make a positive out of a negative.

I wouldn't have 2 $200K wingers considering our backline has taken such a big chunk of our salary cap.

Aggressive Props should still be our target.

Why do people think wingers should be paid far elss than market rate?

It is as important as just about any position on the field.

The first hit up from a kick return sets up your entire set of six. They are called on to make important decisions in defnse; they take most of the high balls.

If you want $100,000 players on the wing you'll get what we got last season...$200k isn't even par salary for the salary cap.

Yeah it is - 168k is 'par'.

Having one 200k winger might not be all that bad, but having 2 of them would mean that one was paying big overs in the wrong place.

With all Guru's talk of getting his attitude right, all I can say is "I'd like to see that". Sure he could be a very damaging player again, but will he? His up and in defence thing has been going on for years, and he's never been good at turning and chasing a kick behind - so I doubt those things will change too much? Just a matter of how well DA can hide them.

Hayne : $400K
Grothe: $250K
Smith:
Inu: $350K
Another Winger: $200K
KK:
Finch: $300K

That's $1.5M

Hindy, Caylo = $800K
Mateo = $300K

Doesn't leave much for the rest.

I think 1 winger on a good salary is enough. The other one should be an enthusiastic up and coming winger like Hayne and Inu when they debut.

I just think more money should be spent in the Halves, Fullback and the PACK.

2 Excellent Wingers doesn't stop tries from being scored up the middle.

Williams would be great on one wing...

That ship has sailed. He was a great prospect and saw that he had little chance to make first grade so he made a sucessful transition to Manly.

We have invested the money into Hayne and Inu, now we have to give them time to prove it was the right choice.

Going on those figures why would you give a rats arse what the winger was being paid?

I would fall over laughing if you tried to shuffle out Grothe to save 100K and continued to pay $1.45 million for Finch, Cayless, Hayne and Inu.

Of course pretty soon after that I'd have to start crying uncontrollably if it turned out to be true.

I think we have a perfect winger coming through in Etu. He should have been used instead of Tony Williams and Talima Tautai.

I'd be tempted to go with:

1. Burt
2. Uiasele
3. Hayne
4. Inu
5. Grothe
6. K Keating
7. Finch
8. Cayless
9. M Keating
10. Paulo
11. Hindmarsh
12. Hauraki
13. Mateo

14. B Smith
15. Wright
16. Moi Moi
17. Oake/Wenty backrower

That way we can bring on Smith to play in the centres and let a fast back roam around or to backrow.

I agree with Hayne in the centres. I think that is worth another shot for three reasons.

1) Hayne will not have the dramas of last season behind him - he was a basket case after the cross incident.
2) He had a blinder in the trial last year at centre - against the roosters. Again - that was before his drama. He really looked the goods in that game - almost Tahu like.
3) He will have a coach who will actually help him in that position.

Burt - is a wait and see for mine. If he plays like he did in '07 then he will keep his spot. Otherwise - Reddy to fullback.

yy, I can tell you now EGJ isn't on 200K..I believe it's marginally less than that.
