Gunners Review

Let me start by saying if you have paid for your ticket take it back and get your money back now!!!

Axel Rose is a fat, egotistical, self important wanker.....

Now for the concert.

I found myself (courtesy to a friend at Universal Music) with a couple of fre tix to last nights Guns and Roses gig at Brisbane. Drove up after work looking forward to seeing Axel in perform after having seen some good live performances on screen.

Started off with Rose Tattoo - and as you would expect Angry Anderson and the boys delivered a good rendition of a slighty more sucessful pub band. Not bad to watch and they did the job of first support well.

Then came Sabastian Bach of Skid Row fame....Ill say one thing - the man knows how to rock, and despite a luke warm crowd to start off with his enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment off what he is doing and was for me the best band of the night. Godzilla was awesome and his infectious attitude rubbed off on all leaving a crowd looking forward to the Gunners.

Now fast forward 1 1\2 hours - yup you heard it right 90 minutes in between Bach did Axel decide to grace us with his presence - and that was about it. Any good vibes he received were blown away by the wait, the girls showing their love melons were more interesting than Axel. That happens when you dont start till midnight, after waiting people stand hor an hour and a half.

The band themselves were only just passable, for such a large member band they severly lacked "sound". The only thickness was between Axel's ears, as the guitarists bends were terrible - regularly missing the bent note and their hammers for the most were terrible. The drummer was the only solid part, with one guitarist good enough to enjoy watching.

Started in darkness with one guitarist walking out and playing some intro notes, they then tried to launch into "Welcome To The Jungle" but failed miserably, Axel calling a halt to the crap for a restart, and this was the very first song.

He then walked to the microphone to abuse the crowd, and was narrowly (more the pity) missed by a flying plastic Coke Bottle - he then launched into a "I am a star I dont have to be here" Rant, which was answered by boos"

They then restarted "Welcome" but he proceeded to sing the first 4 -5 songs stand ing on the one spot in the stage staring straight ahead whilst the band tried to make up for his lack of presence.

Every break he could he would run off the stage (even during songs) and was only on stage when absolutlely necessary. AS the gig wore on (an tedious it was) he started to move around a little, and on occasion actually put effort into his performance. Their "Hits" were OK though and that saved the gig a little.

However what topped it off, The piano came out the second time for "November Rain" he sat down , it took longer than 5 secs for his mic to be made ready and he cracked the sh*ts saying "This is one of those nights - There is nothing wrong with the band it is everything else." Then sorta half played "November Rain". He refused to banter with the crowd, refused to make eye contact with the crowd and spent bugger all time on stage without running off stage.

We left before the concert had finished and by the amount of people leaving we werent the only ones - I estimated that a good third had left by 3\4 through Gunners.

Anyways like I said do what you can to get a refund, if not I hope he was just having a bad night.

I almost went as a friend really wanted to see axl.

Its a real shame that he and his band are destroying the memories of the great band that used to go by the same name.

Once I was dying for a reunion but I have since learnt that bands that once had it, after so long they can never seem to go back and get it. Velvet Revolvers new song is pretty crap as disussed in the other thread, its a shame that all the egos killed of a once kick ass rock band.

What an Arsehole, thank f**k i didn't buy tickets. The guy was a great talent but an A grade c**k. I've never forgiven him for breaking up one of the greatest bands of all time.

I suggested in the other thread that Sebastian Bach may end up fronting GNR during the tour - and I may be right...

So anyone go to the Brisbane concert last night and want to post a review? I'm curious to see if the above review has been seconded.

I saw them years ago when they were first here, they sucked then so i had no intention on going this time around, skid row were 10 times better than them.

Rose tattoo have always been better IMO.

Any Aussie band with a bald singer is better ... :)

thanks Da Kink.

No Probs - Brissy two concerts so Id be interested to see if the second was any better.

Sebastian Bach left Axel for dead - he was energetic and looked like he was having a ball!

I believe they didn't take the stage here in Perth until about midnight too. The review in the newspaper gave the impression that it was a good show -but not great. It mentioned that Axl kept his infamous tantrums in check and the show was incident free (with the exception of the late start).

saturday sydney show was great

seating was good. good venue that superdome. 99 dollar silver reserve seats are the way to go. you could see everything great from where i was...and i dont see the point in standing unless its a wild free for all pit ala frenzal, pennywise or rancid (slayer was a little extreem). standing still...is for stupid people in my opinion.

anyway the show started about 830 ish with Rose Tattoo. id never seen em befor, but on what i witnessed they were worth the price of admission alone. very loud, angry was in top form. very good start..............nice boys was a highlight.

skip foward to about 940 ish (fairly inebriated at this point). sebastian bach starts up. i couldnt name any of his songs as i dont know skid row..but he was running about like a mad thing waving his head around..yelling...he was good. more involved with the crowd than axl rose.

then there was alot of sitting. i drank more beer and got in a mad football discussion with the guy behind me. something about how kimmorley was useless as i recall. he was defending him...maybe it was millers or spidershark...anyway i was rudely interupted at about 11.40 by the lights going out and one of the guitar guys (ill just call em all bucket foot for now) playing the first notes of welcome to the jungle.

Axl comes out

"you know where the f**k you are" ect

next they played its so easy and mr brownstone. they didnt quite have his mike up enough as he was a little hard to hear over the whole crowd yelling the songs.
live n let die you heard his voice. fantastic.

best axl performances were live n let die, knocking on heavens door, better, you could be mine, nice boys with angry anderson...nightrain and paradise city. he didnt do much banter and went off stage a few times to change his shirt. id say that his excess weight, mixed with the fireworks and stage lights made him too sweaty for his liking. changed his shirt 4 times from what i counted.

guitarists were all pretty good. bumblefoot was the best of the 3. he did a solo which started with the star spangled banner, morphed into advance australia fair...then into back in black and then he played dont cry solo. no axl, no other instruments just him. hes pretty good. not slash though.

all up it was a great night. crowd enjoyed themselves, axl wasn't too pedantic or late. sang like a champ and it was well worth the money.

Fantastic concert. I was abit skeptical after hearing reviews but he proved me wrong. He showed energy, spoke to the audience, the pyrotechnices were fantastic, almost everything.

What about Seb Bach everyone? this guy is a legend and really likeable character who gives his all to every concert he does, always happy always positive, always puts on a wonderful show, great to see him return on stage with Axl to do my michelle.

What were your thoughts on the new material?

Ive seen many good GNR cover bands but none with Axl on vocals! From what ive heard the new stuff is very hit and miss, and one which I cant recall the name, when it missed it really missed.

I went to both Sydney shows. Paid for the first night, not for the second. Both night's were basically identical, besides Axl having some dude booted out for 'yelling' something at him on sunday. It was a bloody fantastic show besides TWO things: 1 - The new songs are crap, and 2 - The solo interludes between songs were the most boring sh*t I've had to put up with. There were 3 guitar solos and one piano solo, whilst Axl was out the back getting a breather I presume.

But Axl was on his game, and was surprisingly enegetic, and maybe I was just hearing what I wanted to hear but I thought he sounded pretty good and all the Gunners' classics went off, and I had a ball.

Seb Bach was pretty cool again also. His new material is also crap but the Skid Row classics like 18 and Life and Youth Gone Wild were great.

The Tats rocked also. Great night out!
