The Sydney Kings announced their second signing for the 2011-2012 season, former Parramatta and Roosters rugby league player, Eric Grothe.
The former Australian international and New South Wales State of Origin representative winger played the majority of his club career with the Parramatta Eels.
On his signing, Grothe said that his friendship with Julian Khazzouh, who is a confessed Parramatta Eels supporter, was instrumental in his decision to return to professional sport.
"When Julian told me the Kings were looking for some muscle on the court to open up the lanes and give the shooters a chance to see the hoop from the three point line, I jumped at the chance to try out with the team," Eric said.
"There are a lot of similarities between rugby league and basketball. They are both team sports, both have fouls and both involve moving a ball from one end of a playing area to the other," he added.
The Head Coach said that having Eric Grothe on the team would definitely give the Sydney Kings some of the mongrel it needed.
"We came back into the NBL this year and it is a much tougher game now than it was in the '90s. We needed someone who other teams would fear when they stepped onto the court and who they would find difficult to defend," Coach said.
"His shooting ability needs a bit of work but he is excellent at moving the ball up the court, passes the ball like a pro, and he has great hands.
"Our interest in signing a former rugby league player has certainly sparked interest in the other clubs; and rumour has it that some of them will be following our lead," he added.
A spokesman for the team added that Eric's musical ability would come in handy during half time.
"We are looking forward to Eric playing with his band, Shinobi at half time; which includes his brother Daniel and mates Darren Stapleton and Wayne Langfield.
Eric writes the lyrics for their songs. Shinobi is registered on Triple J Unearthed with the track "Enemy" at Number 13 in the Overall Unearthed Charts," the spokesperson said.
"Eric will suit up for the game against the Gold Coast Blaze tonight, but it is unclear if he will actually get any minutes on the court.
We might save him for the opening game against Melbourne Tigers when the new season tips-off in October," he added.
