Also re: contest for the ball. Whenever I see our game criticised for its lack of a contest in this area I get annoyed. More than any other form of footy league is an attritional battle for field position. The emphasis is on how long a team can stay in the battle and it's why having a really good kicker or three matters so much.

Wok always said 11 per side on the field and reduced interchange would be ideal.

He also replaced Steve Roach and Paul Sironen in the 89 grand final. Not to mention his ABC Klanstand efforts.

Here's what happens if you replace interchange: coaches will replace front rowers with more athletic generic type players who can last longer minutes. So not only will we lose the skillful little man  we'll also lose the big man.

Maybe someone who watches NFL can talk about how that game - with its shares possession and stoppages making it a sort of exaggerated version of RL (i know I know) - how that game generates its variety in attack.

Speed and space.

But the same as league or even union, the game is won on the ground. In the forwards. Set the platform with a solid running game and this opens up space for a passing game. Speed and space. Jack Gibson put it best "same game, different rules"

Correct. Look at ideal 7's players & teams. No need for big blocks there or cheeky little blokes either.

They throw forward passes.
Opens up he whole field when you can do this.

Id go to 8 interchanges first and if it has a positive effect down to 6.
Scrap the scrum. Waste of time.
5 and 10 minute bins and tell the refs to god damn use them.

Biggest issue is the wrestle. This is why I hate Melbourne. Not because tuey have wankers in the team or because they cheated but they have been the biggest contributors to turning rugby league into a boring game. Theyve made progress speeding it up. Maybe ban 3 man tackles.
Also they need to move to weight categories for juniors. The little blokes can play and develop and we stop gettijg these big dumb monsters who just plough 35kg kids make it into the NRL and have nothing else.

Only 22 players on the field, and the defence is not a line. The complexity of the sport forces constant innovation from coaches to try and outsmart each other, and the game allows for so much variety due to being able to pass forward.

Problem is there is more wrestle the less interchanges we get. I can't remember this wrestle with unlimited interchanges. Or was there?

From memory the emphasis was on fast play the balls until the coaches got together and changed it.

Hmmmmm you're right.

The only way is to remove the wrestle. To go crazy out of the box I'd like to see a trial of a buzzer system over the PA signalling when a tackle is complete and players must instantly release.

Removing the wrestle/slow play the ball needs no new rules. Simply:

When an attacking player is tackled and on the ground call held and penalise when the defender doesn't release and roll within 2 seconds maximum; penalise if someone else flops in.

If the attacker is standing call held quickly once the ball wrapped up and momentum is lost. Penalise any 3rd man in after held, penalise any attempt to bring the attacker to ground after held is called and give defenders maximum two seconds to release the ball.

If referees actually kept to those simple rules then the wrestle goes away.

The amount of flops these days are ridiculous!

That's the way I remember it too. Like 10min burst of fat guys like Tookey, Lauitiiti etc.

Clearly the way most games are end to end they can't keep up so coaches came up with other ways to get an advantage

Spot On!!
It's up to the refs to take the wrestle out of the game. I love it now how you can hear the ref call out "Held........Held.........Get off him now!! WTF?? What ever happened to the ref calls Held once, you don't move then your are penalised. It seems now you get about 5 warnings from the ref before he will blow the wistle!!

Well fans get hysterical and complain when there's too many penalties. I'd say a KPI for refs is keeping the penalty count, especially around judgement calls like laying in the tackle.

Make it that if a player is held down more than two seconds after held is called or if someone else comes in after that they're penalised. If they're penalised 3 times for doing the same thing someone goes in the bin.

Put the coaches and players on notice that it won't be tolerated and give the refs support to do it.

Personally the Harrigon "let it flow" mentality is the biggest blight on the game ever. You should ref to the rules of the game and penalise accordingly.

It is the main reason we have all the issues around the ruck with wrestling, walking off the mark, not playing the ball with your foot, etc ....

The ref boss needs to draw a line in the sand in the pre-season. Tell the clubs how it is and penalise the crap out of them in the trials. Clubs will soon learn and adapt. Then simply keep the consistancy throughtout the entire season. Don't drop off after 5/6 weeks!

A lot of the shit in the play the balls is down to the players trying to act as though they are being fouled in nearly every tackle. They get up screaming at the ref after holding a defender to them. The refs should be commended for the "milking" call but it only makes things more tense between officials, players who go on pretending they've been fouled and ignored, and the coaches who need a pink shirted scapegoat after a loss. Penalise milking?

The people's champion, minus the action.

No link to that story some11?

Let me take a wild guess and say that smells like the usual piece of crap from everyone's best drinking partner in Phil Rothfield.

I await your fine retort.
