Just on Media Watch.

Phil Gould's collective memory

First screened 1 August 2005 Presented by Liz Jackson
It's no surprise that rugby league coach and commentator Phil Gould is wallowing in nostalgia for earlier and happier times

The September 11 attacks, Bali and London bombings. Terrorists. My head was whirling with negative thoughts…

I thought about my childhood and the world I grew up in and how different it was from the world we have today… I'm talking hide-and-seek in the park. The corner milk bar, hopscotch, billycarts, cricket in front of the garbage bin, skipping, handstands, footy on the best lawn in the street, British bulldog 1-2-3…

— Sun Herald, 24 July 2005

Oh yes — the good old days. Phil invites us all to turn our minds back.

Close your eyes and go back in time. Before internet and DVD and computer games. Before semi-automatic machine-guns, joy-riders and drugs. Way back.

— Sun Herald, 24 July 2005

Way back — before the internet. Way back — before cut and paste plagiarism. Because sadly Phil's hymn to his fondly remembered childhood was lifted with the click of a mouse.

Visit the Greasy Spoon site and read about memories of growing up in Australia

Walking to school, no matter what the weather. Running until you were out of breath. Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt. Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights. Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for the giggles. Being tired from playing... Remember that?

— Greasy Spoon AND Sun Herald, 24 July 2005

Yes Phil — we remember.

All these sentimental memories were lifted from the web and plonked into Phil's column.

The Sun Herald tells us it was a subbing error.

Remember when we used to believe excuses like that?

Until next week, good night.

Oooh, naughty naughty Media Watch! What they neglect to mention is that Phil Gould qualifies the text he uses in the article. This is an excerpt from his ORIGINAL writeup in that particular Sun-Herald:

Kids have computers, DVDs, CDs, electronic games and pay TV because we are happier to see them at home frying their brains with these things rather than let them go to the park by themselves.

I go to the park with my son for a kick and often we are the only ones there. You couldn't start a game of touch footy even if you wanted to.

It reminded me of an email I received years ago, which I'll share part of with you here.

"Close your eyes and go back in time. Before internet and DVD and computer games. Before semi-automatic machine-guns, joy-riders and drugs. Way back.

"I'm talking hide-and-seek in the park. The corner milk bar, hopscotch, billycarts, cricket in front of the garbage bin, skipping, handstands, footy on the best lawn in the street, British bulldog 1-2-3, slip'n'slide, the trampoline with water on it, hula hoops, pogo sticks, jumping in enormous puddles, mud pies, building dams in the gutter, silkworms and mulberry trees. The smell of the sun on freshly cut grass. Bubble gum. A choc-top Mr Whippy cone on a warm summer night after you've chased him around the block.

It goes on with more extracts, ALL of which are surrounded with quotations. Media Watch doesn't mention that, do they?

I don't think he'd be stupid enough to claim it as his own (Gould or not). How many have received that chain letter, I know I've gotten it about seevn or eight times, though the version I read of this had the line stating he got it from an e-mail.

Idiot he is.

He also named our team for last week vs Saints. Catic in the centres says it all.

Later editions of the Sun-Herald from a week ago which were sent out to areas outside metropolitan Sydney had the amended article. Ray Hadley mentioned about the article and email on his show that afternoon and the editor of the paper called in to explain the whole situation. Since later editions supposedly had the original article, Media Watch should have mentioned it.

Gould mentioned in the article that it wasn't his work. He said before quoting that stuff "It reminded me of an email I received a couple of years back. I'll share part of it here"

NPK I think you should learn what a plagiarist is. A plagiarist claims that someone elses work is his own. He doesn't mention that it isn't his work. Gould did.

You're right Razor - I think Media Watch may have stuffed up there

Here is the article from Gould:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/league/give-me-a-blast-from-the-past/2005/07/23/1121539191009.html

Maybe he could have given the original source - but I bet it is one of those things that is on a dozen sites.
Still, Media Watch claimed to have asked the Herald about it and they said it was a "subbing error"

It was typical Mediawatch muckraking. Mediawatch should be mediawatched themselves sometimes, I have picked on a couple of things they have reported on in the past that are wrong.

Whether Gould says it's his own work or not shouldn't matter. If you had a school assignment that was plagiarised and you said, "oh I got it off this internet site", should that mean you don't get penalised for it?

That isn't exactly correct. The original article as published in the Sun Herald does not contain that line you just mentioned. It was added in later editions published after complaints were recieved, either Gould didn't aknowledge the source in the first place, or the Herald left out that line intentionaly so readers would think it was his own work, either way Media Watch are quite right to point out the flaw.
