GWS' Debut Year

I thought it would be worthwhile commencing a thread on the AFL board to commemorate GWS' debut year in the big league.

This is Australian sporting history in the making, a very exciting time, and one we are all eagerly following.

Obviously to spread the biggest propaganda, they'll most likely arrange for the Swans to take a dive...

I don't think so - the Suns were thrashed by 20 goals in their very first game, and were smashed in a few other games - it's far fetched to think the AFL administration tries to rig matches.

Off the field, they try and create an environment where clubs can be financially healthy, have a chance to recruit quality players, etc - but after that, it's up to the clubs on match day.

When an expansion team wins a :lol:flag:lol: because it was given top choice player picks etc it's not really fair. All the other teams are at a disadvantage.

So yes the AFL does have a record of rigging competition results.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the Storm won the NRL in only their second year.

that sort of outcome is an impossibility in the AFL - you have to earn it

The Storm weren't given any priority draft picks unlike Sydney & Brisbane.

Swans & Lions only won because of the concessions the AFL gave them.

But how could a brand new team - set up in a city that has no knowledge of the game - win the comp in their second year?

As I said, such an eventuality is impossible in the AFL - as we saw with the Suns last season, and we'll see the same with the Giants - even with all those extra draft picks - all that is doing is helping them lose by an average of 10 goals rather than an average of 20 goals - there will be no premiership in the second year.

They weren't a bunch of juniors like the Giants. Giants don't just benefit from 1 year of draft picks - they will benefit from multiple years of draft picks designed to give them the best opportunity to win a :lol:flag:lol: before the cycle is completed.

The majority of the Storm players had previous senior level experience. That's why they won.

It's still extraordinary that a brand new team, set up in a city that is unfamiliar with the game, would win the compeition in only their second year, as happened to the Storm.

That will not happen the AFL- of that much I can assure you.

But when GWS does win it will be off the back of draft concessions and nothing more.

The fans of every other club would be right to feel pissed off when it happens.

If, when, but, maybe - I give you this solemn promise that it will not win a premiership in its first two season, or even inside three seasons, or even inside fours seasons (beyond that - it's in the lap of the gods).

The Brisbane Lions won 3 :lol:flags:lol: in a row because they had a 15% salary cap concession.

When Sydney Swans won the :lol:flag:lol: that had a 7% concession.

So it did happen within the timeline of the advantages given to those teams.

The Brisbane Bears first entered the VFL in 1987, then merged with Fitzroy in 1997, winning a premiership in 2001-2-3.

I'm not sure how you can compare that feat with the Storm winning the comp in only their second season - the question really has to be asked - how was that at all possible??

they had a team full of rejects from SL and ARL clubs that died when the NRL was formed plus players they bought

all under the same same salary cap and same rules as every other side

how else do you think they won it?

After they merged the Brisbane Lions were given a 15% salary cap concession.

That concession ended in time for the 2004 season because giving away 3 :lol:flags:lol: just looked too obvious.

Irrelevant. Storm won their 2nd year premiership fairly (unlike their others) by quality recruitment and coaching. Swans and Lions won theirs on the back of massive legups from the AFL.

Yes. I mean 3 flags in 3 years is a bit much.

Notice though that when the benefits were decreased the streak suffered.

And during that time played against sides such as the westen bulldogs who could only afford to pay 92% of the cap ,
115 -92 = 20% or reverse 92 + 25%= 115 either way it's bullshit

It's a wonder anyone attended or watched those games in any hope of a contest,
But the AFL got their wish

GWS maybe 3 -4 wins; lions , Melbourne, port , suns, tigers all vulnerable
