Hagan on salvage mission
By Dean Ritchie
September 05, 2008 DEPRESSED Parramatta coach Michael Hagan has promised a spirited and determined finale to his side's miserable season.
The Eels have failed badly this year, missing the final eight after coming within one win of last season's grand final.
With their season on the line last Saturday night at Homebush, Parramatta were belted 40-14 by a hungry St George Illawarra.
The Eels can at least finish the season successfully with a win over the Warriors at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night.
"We are a little embarrassed by the way we played last week," Hagan said.
"We want to salvage something from our season. I thought the previous four to five weeks before last weekend were pretty good. We have to get back to where we were."
Despite a handy playing roster, littered with representative stars, Parramatta have been the NRL's major underachievers for 2008.
"The fact we were so disappointing last weekend in a match that was so important will ensure motivation for this weekend," Hagan promised. The players and myself want to end the year well and I think the fans expect a decent performance from us too."
Asked to describe their season, Hagan said: "The way we played and where we sit on the table pretty much typifies our year.
"We weren't far off making the top eight but are also way off where we need to be."
To reach the finals, the Warriors must beat Parramatta and hope Brisbane beat Newcastle - both likely scenarios.
New Zealand scored a huge win over Penrith at Mount Smart Stadium last Sunday and have experienced a strong season.
