Hagan tips Hayne move Brad Earl
28Nov06
JARRYD Hayne is tipped to move from the wing to fullback before too long but new Parramatta Eels coach Michael Hagan believes the boom teenager could also play in the centres.

He revealed that last Thursday when he was guest speaker at Parramatta Leagues Club's annual breakfast to help Parramatta Mission feed the less fortunate at Christmas.
While Hayne has made no secret of his desire to ultimately play fullback, Hagan said the NRL Rookie of the Year ``needs to find his feet a bit in first grade, if that means being on the wing for a little while''.
``But ultimately, he looks like a real footballer to me . . . maybe fullback or centre down the track,'' Hagan said.
``I think he's got some real instincts for the game.''
On Hayne not getting any game time with the Kangaroos in the Tri-Nations series, Hagan would have liked to have seen him given a run in the preliminary matches.
``It's disappointing if you're part of a 23-man squad and they play three or four games and you can't get a look in,'' he said.
``I guess it'd be great experience for him. He's only a 19-year-old and he had a wonderful season with Parramatta.
``I'm sure he'll be a better player because of the experience of being with [coach] Ricky Stuart and the Australian team.''
Hagan was interviewed by the club's corporate sales and marketing manager and former premiership-winning captain Steve Edge, whose trademark repartee was matched by Hagan's self-deprecating sense of humour.
Asked about the Eels' chances of making the top four next season, Hagan replied: ``I think that's a realistic goal, Edgey for your marketing purposes.''
He stressed it would come down to ``keeping your best players on the park''.
Edge also brought up the most anticipated aspect of the Eels' 2007 line-up the halves combination of Tim Smith and new signing Brett Finch.
``I think they'll work well together and I think they'll lead the team around the park pretty well,'' he said.

actually it wasn't the only try saver, he intercepted a pass that was going to Rooney while following an attacking raid on his side of the field.

he's definitely a special kid.

that was very very impressive .... i can't imagine too many ppl would have stopped wesser in that situation ..... my gut feeling is to have Hayne or Reddy fullback to start 07

hages said hayne still has to learn stuff - which is true .... but he played half a season on the wing and I don't know if he is gonna learn much about playing other positions being put out on the wing

Hayne should be the fullback. I like Reddy but there is no way you can even compare him with Hayne. Reddy for mine should bulk up and try to make it in the backrow. From memory I think his father started off in the backs and became one of Australia's greatest second rowers.

I reckon Reddy is missing a X Factor. He reminds me of a cheap version of Andrew Leeds.

if this bloke can score the amount of trys he did having John Morris as your service man can you imagine the sort of balls he'd get from Finch??

I'm happy to see him stay on the wing for the time being but a shift closer to the play is imminent.

Andrew Leeds was safe but never spectacular. IIRC his place was made more secure because of his goal kicking record.

Yes Reddy reminds me of Leeds as well. He would be my last resort.

Good to know that Hagan see's whats best for these players, of course Hayne can play centre/wing/fullback. I'd like to see him at fullback, he's safe as houses under the high ball, dangerous runner, it'll be interesting to see him up the middle, going through the hole.

yeah i'm not opposed to hayne staying on the wing tbh - if he can score 17 tries there in half a season then i'd like to see what he can do in a full season .... but it leaves fullback .... so i dunno????

I still have a lot faith in Burt at fullback, his form in the backend of the season has indicated to me that he can still be of great value there..but like many blokes in the team he is on notice.

The form of Inu or Lett might push Hayne to fullback before Hagan thought, and may dash the hopes of Burt or Reddy. Then again if big Ben does not return to 05 form Hayne or Inu might be in the centres. I think our forward pack has more depth and toughness than recent years and our outside backs unlimited pace and skill (as long as not to many injuries). For me it is just if Tim and Finch can fire together as besides Blake there is not a lot of depth there in the halves.

Inu's defense still worries me greatly...there's a bit of work to do there.

Burt is NOT a fullback - pure and simple. Yes, he did have a few good games there, but there still is, and always has been, a question about his ability under the high ball and his one on one defence.

I have no doubt that Hayne is the man at fullback. Yes, he scored 17 tries on the wing. Who's to say he won't do the same from the back?

I'd start Hayne at fullback next year and have Burt on the wing. Reddy, definitely lacks that x factor, as someone has already said.
Maybe he should become a football goalkeeper.

I'm with Suity.

Imagine all the tries he can setup too at Fullback! The more ball he gets, the better.

Reddy doesn't need the X factor, we already have plenty of them, how about just a relaible fullback who can tackle, take high balls, and provides good postional play.

Haynes defense and positional play got caught out many times this year, just remember he was getting targeted quite abit in the latter part of this year, for that reason i don't think he should be fullback.

Ron is right in that he was targeted last year and did make boobies (or is that boo boos?). It would be nice to have a fullback that can play like Hunt, Webb, Locky chiming in and setting up plays as well.
