JARRYD HAYNE seems to have done it all in recent months. But he has added something else to his rapidly swelling bag of achievements: voted as the game's best by the most revered players in the NRL.

The seven captains - and one representative for a stricken one - of the league's finalists were polled yesterday on the subject of who had been the best player in the game this season. Four of them opted for Hayne, the Parramatta fullback who has led a remarkable resurgence of his side.

''Jarryd Hayne's second half of the year has been outstanding,'' said Newcastle fullback Kurt Gidley. ''From the back end of the year, he's been the best player in the competition.

''Johnathan Thurston's always up there for what he does for his team in games [but] I'd say Jarryd, just because of what he's been doing for his team and in Origin. I've been playing with him for a few years - even in from the games I've played in PNG with him. I knew he always had it in him, because he's just that naturally gifted athlete. I think he's just got his head on the job now, too.''

The two most worthy candidates, according to the skippers, were Hayne and Jamie Soward, and both had credible cases. Soward, the Dragons five-eighth, had consistency on his side while Hayne enjoyed unrivalled form during the Origin series and the latter stages of the season, but also some poor displays in earlier matches.

Hayne's most recent accomplishments, though, appeared to carry more weight; Hayne even won the vote without the backing of his club captain, Nathan Cayless, while Manly captain Matt Orford could not split three players including Hayne and Soward.

Gold Coast's Scott Prince said Hayne's Origin series put him in front of his rival, whom he will meet for the second successive weekend on Sunday at Kogarah.

''I'd have to say Hayne, only if you include the Origin series,'' Prince said. ''I thought he was outstanding then, and his form over the last 10 or 12 rounds has been electric.''

Soward's support came from his own side, and the Eels.

In skipper Ben Hornby's absence from yesterday's captains' call, Dean Young offered: ''Jarryd Hayne has been in rare form, and is probably the best player in the game at the moment. There's Anthony Watmough, Jamie Soward - he's had a big year for us and contributed really well. He's played out of his skin at certain stages this year. I think Jamie would have to get it.''

Cayless added: ''You'd like to say Jarryd; he's had such a great back end of the year. But he's a bit like our team. We mirrored the way he played. We were pretty poor at the start of the year. I think Soward has been so consistent the whole year, and that's what it goes on. Thurston's been good - unfortunately his team's not in the semis - but every week he pretty much carries their team. If you go on consistency, Soward.''

Great team spirit shown by Cayless there. Not. That's why there seems to be a division between the senior and younger players in the team. Hindmarsh and Cayless seem to be jealous or something of Hayne?? He's the best player in the game, they should be proud and thankful that he's on their side. Hindmarsh always states, "And the good thing about it is he's not getting a big head??"
Love Hindy but he needs to get over himself.
Do you also notice that our team doesn't celebrate tries like a proper team? It's always low key, ''Well done, it's just my job sort of thing?" I don't want them to be over the top arrogant yahooing d*cks like Melbourne, Brisbane etc but SHOW SOME LOVE boys. And remember, this stems down from when Hindmarsh bagged Hayne for supposedly "over-celebrating??" a try in one game when we spanked the Broncos a few years back. He had this sour look on his face?

Well Cayless may be captain, and Hindy the Parra legend but our best player is now Jarryd Hayne and will be as long as he plays for Parra. They should show him the respect he deserves, no matter how young he is.

I think Caylo did the right thing. Not give the Dragons any ammo by voting for Soward.

I concur. Cayless did the right thing voting for Soward IMO. Even if he thinks that Hayne is better, it shows that he is being objective.

Actually, it shows the exact opposite. Being objective would lead to voting for whoever you think the best player is even if they play for your team. Deliberately excluding your own players is as subjective as it comes.

Also...it's creeping in, isn't it?

Gee maybe Cayless just rates Soward. Is that so hard to come to terms with? Not everyone needs to blow their load over Jarryd Hayne.

Parra Guru said it all, Soward has been dominant all year... The way the RL world has been going lately, The Lonely Island could do a Hayne version of Jizz in my Pants.

It definitely wasn't an objective pick, no

Just more of the mind games ;-)

Piss Hayne off then?? You people think you have a higher rugby league knowledge, by not agreeing with the media etc over Jarryd Hayne's exploits, trying to be humble whatever, but if Hayne played for a different team you'd happily go on about how great he is.

If you're a Parramatta supporter how could you ever get bored of talking about how great Hayne is? You'd happily go on talking about how sh*te he is, if he was stinking it up every weekend.

If he doesn't take out Dally M, that'll do me. This Eels supporter will be cheering him on anyway.

you do realise that there is an between viewpoint to:

a) Hayne is the best player in the world and there is noone better and anyone that thinks otherwise is a fool and

b) Hayne is unwanted by Parra because his captain disrespected him in not naming him the best player in the world

And before you have a crack at me, I am a massive fan of Jarryd Hayne and also hope that he is named Dally M player of the year tonight. I also hope that he stays at Parra for life.

No, I just have a higher rugby league knowledge because I understand th game better than the media and the likes of you.

but if Hayne played for a different team you'd happily go on about how great he is.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. The last few months around this place have been absolutely 100% focused on a HaHa wankfest. If anyone even dared not give her the 3 pts they were crucified. If they didn't spend the first 3 days after each game orgasming over her every move they were crucified.

You seriously are more of an idiot than that HOG idiot that has recently showed up.

This Eels supporter will be cheering him on anyway.

So will this one, irrespective of whether she wins that piece of journalistic tripe tonight.

I never said I don't like him as a player. I hope he wins as a Parramatta supporter, but in my opinion, Jamie Soward has been the best player in the NRL consistently in 2009.

Get over yourself.

I'm as un-biased as you all, but sometimes when a player or athlete like Jarryd Hayne comes along, the quote above, is more than reasonable, and anyone who disagrees, IS wrong.

Is Tiger Woods the greatest, yes. Is Roger Federer the greatest, yes. Is Valentino Rossi the greatest, yes. No argument. Jarryd Hayne is in that calibre.

Hollywood Jesus, your entry shows your own dislike for our best player??? Didn't he take to your advances after you cornered him in the Parra leagues toilets?

Don't get too cut, sweetheart. The fact that you can't discern between a flavour-of-the-month and a long term, proven player is not my fault.

By the way, our best player is Joel Reddy. He's consistently proven that over the last two years in a team that has generally struggled. That's the sign of a true class player.
