Handshake Bets

Handshake bets. How binding do you think they are?During the season ive had a heap of small handshake bets and won some and lost some, both parties have paid up with these bets no problem.
However there have also been ''long term'' handshake bets, for example bets between which teams will finish the regular season higher on the ladder, teams missing out on the eight etc etc.Somehow ive won all the longterm bets except one.Suddenly blokes seemingly cant remember(they are all written down and signed on coasters or whatever) or have to much butthurt to pay up.
The total of amount of these bets is a fair whack and has already strained a few ''friendships'' because i know as sure as shit that if I had lost i'd be bloody well getting chased up to pay up.
I'd prefer not to get nasty.

Mate they are scum if they don't honor a bet. Cut scum from your life.

IMO handshake bets are based on honour. These people obviously lack it. Why not visit these people to collect, on the way to cricket with bat in hand? :sarcasm:

As a rule of thumb for me, for anything over $100, get a mutual friend as witness.

If the the person is tardy in paying, they should be shamed at every opportunity.

Nothing worse than a welcher. A serious breach of man code.

Some of these bets actually have signatures...ALL have at least one witness. In some cases the witness has actually also lost a bet.

Yeh most of my mates who dont pay up are addicts and it kills them more i wont give them any action. Kills them at the pub when i wont let them chuck in a 20 to our pool that we just randomly chuck on dogs or when versing them in anything (tennis, golf).

I wouldnt make a sizable bet with someone i wasnt positive they would pay and for anything else i refuse to give any more action and will bring it up on occassions where they wont like it i.e on the tune at the bar.

Sounds more binding than a simple handshake bet then.

If they don't pay, especially if they have signed it and have a witness, you should decide wether you want to remain friends with this type of person.

I'm presuming you have never welched on a bet to deserve this type of behaviour in return.

Welching is quite shitty behaviour when you think about.

They are pretty much taking a shit on their own word and integrity.

Fool you once and all that.
