Happy Birthday XIII a side rugby

September 1st marks the day when the Northern union first played under 13 a side rules with a play the ball instead of rucking and mauling, giving birth to modern rugby league as we know it.
They had already got rid of lineouts to speed up the game, and changed the rules on scoring to reward try scorers with more points than goal kickers..
So raise a glass and say Happy 100th Birthday modern Rugby League.:thumb

I think the Northern Union managed to become better before that, sometime during the 1895-96 season. :lol:

Modern day union is a museum piece but, with not having changed in the last 120 years, it offers a window into the past, a unique opportunity to observe at first hand a major 19th century leisure activity.
