The Harold Matthews cup was held over two days this weekend just gone. There were 20 teams represented, including several country groups and a team from Melbourne.
Local teams included Newcastle, Coalfields (called Maitland in the comp, but representing Cessnock, Kurri Kurri and even West Wallsend) and the Central Coast rip side (doesn't mean rest in peace, but should, because they play dead well).
Newcastle lost their first game against Illawarra 22 12, but won their remaining pool matches against Cronulla 24 0, Central Coast 26 6 and Group 18 40 6. They met Parra in the first knockout game and lost. Parra went on to win the title.
