Has there been a poorer half of football ever?

That game showed the best and worst of this team.

The Best - never say die attitude, Nathan Gardner's pace, Gallen's workrate, decent offloads

The Worst - complete lack of football IQ, laziness around the ruck, poor kicking game, tragic goal line defence

There is plenty to work with to make this team a competitive unit but there is a hell of a long way to go.

Smith has to go. I'm glad to see Sticky hooked up, at least he can see the problem.

Bring back Porter. Alternatively, put Morris there as a distributor to Barrett, and have Flanagan and Aiton as the hookers.

why why why did they keep taking rubbish field goal attempts early in the count, should have went for the try and put the game away 20 minutes earlier

I actually thought smiths pass was good. Pom had to reach backwards to take it.
Should have been play on

I agree and on replay Smith actually is bit over the line and Pom reaches back behind the line to catch it.

Bum call really, but so was the one on Thurston earlier.

Because they have uni dimensional thinking. Stuart probably said get in position for a field goal. So as soon as they were in position, which was happening too easily from the Cows perspective, and no matter what tackle it was they were firing one off.

The whole field goal thing was an abomination. At times there were three field goal kickers on. Possible 4 if anyone would of though that maybe Gardner could pot one from the left side.

Not once did The Sharks get more than one kicker in position. Yet at the same time the Cows had shooters both side of the ruck. They knew.

Not once did anyone have a look at the Cows line and see how compressed they were. There were try opportunities on when they were taking shots on the first tackle.

Still a lack of confidence in their try scoring ability it seems.

Reminds me of Luke Priddis playing the tree card trick in the 03 GF. FG kicker in place, Priddis dummies open side and goes blind, putting Luke Rooney over.

The field goal debacle showed just what separates Cronulla from the good sides. There was no precision in the attack. They should have a call for setting up for a field goal so each player knows his role and it happens automatically. There should always be an option kicker if the main kicker is under pressure and the backs must be aware that there could be a quick shift on if the defence compresses and shoots.

They have plenty of time to train to get this stuff right.

Last 2 posts basically summed up my feeling on it. We had them on the ropes, yet persisted with taking field goal attempts on the first and second tackle, it was ridiculous.

The cut-out to the left winger around half way?
Not at all. It travelled about 4 metres forward. He was not running at pace, and was running sideways.
Simple physics tells you it was not momentum that carried the ball forward

All correct, but.........he didn't throw it forward IMO. It can go forward as much as it happens to as long as it wasn't deliberately thrown forward.

Not true. If a player suffers a bad head knock and is disoriented, facing the sideline and throws a pass towards the opposition try line it's not deliberate but it's still forward.

Intent has nothing to do with it

Throwing in a red herring doesn't change the rule. Intent is all important

From laws of the game

1. Direction of Pass: The direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and not to the actual path relative to the ground. A player running towards his opponents’ goal line may throw the ball towards a colleague who is behind him but because of the thrower’s own momentum the ball travels forward relative to the ground. This is not a forward pass as the thrower has not passed the ball forward in relation to himself. This is particularly noticeable when a running player makes a high, lobbed pass.

Scrum for Forward Pass: A forward pass in a passing movement is invariably caused by misjudgment and is rarely a deliberate offence. Play is restarted with a scrum after an accidental infringement. Penalty for some forward passes: If the Referee is of the opinion that a player in giving a forward pass must have been well aware that the catcher was in front of him then the referee is justified in ruling that the ball has been deliberately thrown forward. Ball is blown or bounces forward: If the ball is passed correctly but bounces forward or is blown forward by the wind, there is no infringement and play should continue.

They rarely get it right either way actually

Precisely my point. Thurston was running sideways, therefore there was no forward momentum. The ball was thrown forward. It had nothing to do with momentum as there was none

I think he was running forwards actually. Diagonally so and at a flat angle. Also, the catcher was behind him when the pass was thrown.
