The extension early in the year was extremely puzzling however this is what I got told by someone at the tigers:
* in the off season Ivan Cleary had an agreement to take over the Dogs role in 2018, he knocked back an offer from the Dragons around the same time because of this
* Ivan wanted it signed off on but the Dogs kept stuffing around. The tigers job came up and he took it as he wanted to coach again and was sick of waiting
* dogs didn't want to be left with nothing so resigned Des in a panic move only days later
I don't think McGuire is the answer. He was able to play cheque book footy with a strong side and unlimited resources at the Bunnies. The Dogs cap is a mess, squad is weak and MM hasn't shown he is a guy who can turn average players into good ones. He'd be better at the Titans or Dragons who already have decent lists he can work with.
Dean Pay or ironically Geoff Toovey would be the best fits for the current Dogs set up IMO
