NEW Manly Coach Des Hasler has surrounded himself with a winning culture after securing the assistance of a number of former internationals and premiership winners for next season.
Joining Hasler on the coaching staff at the Sea Eagles are Mark Carroll, Steve Roach, Geoff Toovey and Les Boyd.
Bob Fulton is tipped to help in an unofficial capacity, while Cliff Lyons is deliberating over an offer to help the backs.
The men asked to help by Hasler have played or coached in 22 grand finals between them.
The man who stands out is Roach, the only recruit who hasnt played for Manly.
The former Test prop, who played all his football with Balmain, will be a part-time assistant coach to Hasler and said he would be surprised if Tigers fans viewed his move as being disloyal.
They shouldnt have look at me like that because Ive never been offered a position at the Tigers, he said yesterday.
I love the Tigers but I also love the game and this is an opportunity to get involved again and Im exciting about it.
I think I can add something to Manly and Des obviously does a well.
Hasler, who have taken over from Peter Sharp, plans to have the Sea Eagles training by early November.
Carroll, prop in Manlys 1996 premiership win, will be an assistant to Premier League coach Toovey and also work with the clubs forwards. He wants to correct Manlys woeful defensive record. In their five games of the season the Sea Eagles conceded 40 or more points.
Manly had the worst defensive record this year and thats just not on. Carroll said, A lot has to do with attitude, but youve got to put your body on the line, too.
Meanwhile, a decision is expected this week on the future of injured five-eighth Ben Walker. The Sea Eagles have concerns about whether Walker can come back from his knee reconstruction and have signed young halves Jye Mullane and Michael Monaghan.
It is understood a pay-out figure will be put to Walker this week.
