Hasler calls for change to video refs

Monday, August 27, 2007

http://nrl.com/News/Latest/NewsArticle/tabid/76/NewsId/6782/Default.aspx Manly coach Des Hasler has called for immediate changes to the NRL's use of video referees and wants more power handed back to the on-field whistleblowers.
Hasler remains upset at a crucial no-try ruling for obstruction by video referee Chris Ward in Sunday's loss to New Zealand Warriors, claiming referee Paul Simpkins wanted to award the try but was over-ruled after seeking clarification from the fourth official.
He claims there is too much inconsistency in the rulings between referees and video officials and wants the person with the whistle to be given total control.
The Sea Eagles coach wants the NRL to immediately investigate adopting an NFL-style video review system whereby the referee can watch replays of incidents on sideline monitors.
Hasler says the NRL could easily install monitors at both ends of the ground allowing referees to simply go behind the dead-ball line to view footage and make all the decisions regarding suspect tries.
"If the referee thinks he didn't see the bounce of the ball or hasn't got a clear view of the try let him go to the dead in goal or sideline and look at the viewing box and let him make the decision," said Hasler.
"It's quite easy and here's a chance for the NRL, (chief executive) David Gallop, to show some real initiative and investigate it.
"Let the referees do the same thing (as NFL) then it's all on his shoulders so to speak.
"There would be a lot more consistency and it would be a lot clearer."
Hasler is concerned that the continued inconsistency surrounding the obstruction rule, which was tweaked mid-season to reduce confusion, could prove costly in next month's finals series.
He says the NRL needs to immediately address the issues of referees prior to the playoffs.
"I don't know who is doing the coaching of the referees or who is coaching who but there is an inconsistency there I think anyway," said Hasler.
"They need to fix it and fix it quick because we have got some playoffs coming up in a couple of weeks time.
"Yesterday's result probably didn't mean much and won't change the competition ladder but in a couple of weeks there's a lot more at stake. They need to fix it and fix it quick."

If Simplekins wanted to award the try, he should of instead of asking Ward to hold his hand.

Having a set of nads should be a basic requirement as a ref.

does anyone have a rough percentage of how many try's are sent to the man upstairs?
at the moment, it feels as though 80% of try's are sent.

when i think what was brought in to assist with the process, has acutally become the process.
and in most cases, the refs in the box are in there becuase they were dud onfield ref's.

I say the onfield ref should make most of the calls, and use his touchies a lot more.

it seems like no-one wants to be to blamed for mistakes.
and in the process, the burn out in box gets to waste 5mins and still f**k up the call.

The solution is a simple one.

Video refs should only be aloud to ajudicate on the grounding of the ball. Nothing else.

Had this been in place on the weekend, everything would have been fine for both games.

Leave it as it is. There will always be mistakes- refs are human. But in the end teams should be good enough to win!

actually locky, its not about winning. Its about the rules being adherred to fairly and properly.

I have seen very little of it this season.

Don't think we can change the rules until next season and I think we need to trial a few different options to see what works as the current system IS NOT!!

I would like to take the pressure off the referees and place it back on the teams and coaches and introduce NFL or Tennis major's style challenges. 1 wrong challenge per half only I think, but if you don't use it in the first half you get 2 in the 2nd half.

Why would this not work in our game????

Just look at the games today. The player's reaction tells you if it is a try or not. Let them make the critical decisions!!! Their brains are working faster and better than referees because of the importance to them of the situation!!

It will speed up the play by less video interference and improve referee standards by removing unnecessary pressure from them.

Yesturday for example, the Raiders were clearly not the best team, they made 20 errors and were overall pretty terrible, however it was 2 refereeing decisions that single handedly robbed them of an ugly win. No matter how badly they played yesturday and how undeserving they might have been, if the referee had gotten the basic decisions right, they would have won.

you can crap on about "the better team won" until the cows come home but the fact of the matter is. Had those 2 decisions been correct, the Raiders win.

What 2 decisions? The Carney try..yes possibly you have a point, what other one? And the Carney one was 50/50.

There was actually an 18 point turn around in that game

The Todd Carney No try, which should have been awared, from that call, Parker scored for brisbane, from a position the broncos had no right to be in, thats 12 points just there

and then the michaels try without downward pressure

You can't have perfection, everyone screws up decisions its how sports has been.

I do agree that something needs to be done but what? Trying things upsets people and they want to go back to the old ways.

I love des, but time to zip it now. The media are having a field day with this, and will soon turn it around to make him look stupid.

Gavin Badger would be 90%. He is a shocker

I blame the trial by media. If they make a decision and it is wrong they get crucified. Better to give the decision to someone else.
