In Des's defense though, what more could he achieve at Manly?

Two premierships and overseeing the evolution of what was once a bankrupt, struggling club to one that surely is the envy of the NRL.

merkinerbury is a huge challenge, and professionals love challenges. I was merely hoping that he' be around for another 3 years before leaving. He certainly could have created a Bennett-esque area.

Regardless of what happens, I still love the bloke dearly.

All the more reason why winning a premiership should assure that this does not happen. If the NRL or independent commission are fair dinkum the prizemoney for the premiers should be at least $5 million. Not the paltry high hundred thousands as it stands now.

I'm no Manly fan for the obvious reasons but I respect them. It's shit for them that Hasler is leaving and should not have happened especially seeing that he is a Sea Eagles' legend.

Which part of that involves the Eels? Hopoate I can understand. There is a whole thread on this in the NRL forum. Anyway, I'm sure the brilliant reply will be "to wind you up blah blah blah". Hasler's done it in much harder circumstances though.

To be honest, Bennett should have won the comp every year at Brisbane. I was unconvinced about him until he won at the Dragons and even then it took a grand final vs Brian Smith and the team who ran last the year before.

The Dragons under Bennett went out in straight sets in '09 and '11, and in 2010 they beat the teams that finished 8th (Manly), 3rd (Tigers) by 1 point, and 6th (Roosters).

They had a dream finals run, which seems to be the recipe for winning a premiership.

Contrast this with the 2009 Eels who had to play the top 4 teams - we beat the Dragons (1st), Titans (3rd), Bulldogs (2nd) and finally lost to a full strength Storm (4th).

That same year the Storm won the grand final after belting Manly (5th) and Brisbane (6th) and then cruised home against the Eels (8th).

Goes to show finishing near the top of the ladder is the real achievement. After that it's just a game of luck who you face in the decider.

But to do it twice in four years is no accident, no matter how lucky you are.
