Hayne and Slater are similar players really. They attack the line on a kick return in different styles but with similar results. Haynes work on the edges is as effective as the work that Slater does around the ruck.

Id say that Slater can chime into a backline movement alot smoother then Hayne, but Hayne is physically much more effective. So strong for a fullback.

Both have good support play.

They are definatly a higher class of fullback then the likes of McKinnon and Pattern whose only real attributes are their support play and safety on kick returns.

However, it depends on the balance of the team.

If you have your $$ invested in the 9 and 6/7 and props, a Mckinnon/Pattern might be more cost justifiable

Hayne obviously upset that Slater dominated in Origin and locked up the Kangaroos #1 for the foreseeable future.

Disagree.

The game needs rivalries like this. It's great. It'll add even more spice to the clash next time they play each other.

yeah, nothing wrong with a bit of off field sledging, there hasn't been one like this for years.

the game is in desperate need of characters and rivalries..

True, but you look at the way Jarryd Hayne plays, you could get away with a sub par five eight. Same with Slater, his play making makes up for their five eight worries Melbourne have had for a lil while now.

What we are lacking is a player or two working away in the middle of the field.

2 games head to head at fullback.

Hayne dominated Slater in game 3 - a game which the Maroons won narrowly.

Slater got the better of game 2 (although was reasonably quiet) - a game the Blues were absolutely annihilated. Hayne the only Blue who looked remotely dangerous - pick of the Blues by a country mile.

Andrew - you make a lot of inane posts on these forums based on useless speculation and vague public sentiment. If you took more time to assess the facts and look at things objectively you'd have a better grasp of the reality of the situation.

Hayne has been a better fullback than Slater for the last 2 years AND he has been playing in a 'legal' squad.
Any merkin who thinks that playing with an extra $1-2 million worth of players won't improve a players game is dead-set kidding themselves.

And to get the Australian jersey is often about who got there first and whether or not they are either (1) injured, or (2) so down on form that you have no option BUT to drop them.

Smaller men than Slater have won it, but they didn't suffer from it.
It's quite obvious that the little former jockey has tiny man's disease. Just watch him everytime he's tackled.

I remember not too long ago, people stated the following reasons as to why Hayne is worse than Slater:
Poor defense
0 positional play on kick returns

Funny, in game 3, he outplayed Slater in every aspect except for that Watmough try-saver.

Speaking of Watmough.............. and that Slater save of his try................

fair dinkum - if that had been a QLD'er in that position, and say - Slater was fullback for NSW, there is no way the QLD'er wouldn't have scored that try. Fair dinkum, I just don't understand the plaudits Slater is getting when the only reason he stopped the try was because Watmough was too thick and not motivated enough to actually show some passion for his Blue jumper and fight to reach out and put the ball down. I could not believe his lack of conviction and effort. In saying that, I saw some highlights today of the Manly / Raiders game from last night. Watmough easily the worst player on the field. I lol'ed at Watmough when the Raiders player just walked past him in the first half to score.
Also people, have a look at Brent Kite's effort when Campese scored the last try. And we think WE have motivational problems???????

Yeah, that was a dead set easy ass try.
ANYONE would've had the common sense to just duck under and dive for that try, easy 4 points, except maybe Brett Morris - would've knocked the ball on.
I don't know if its just me, but 110% of the stuff Slater does comes on the back of:
- the best halves
- the best forward pack
He didn't deserve that man of the match nor the Wally Lewis medal, imo should've gone to the forwards or the halves for babyfeeding him everything.

Someone tell me i'm wrong when i think Hayne does a great job to match those accolades with a weaker pack behind him.

Stats don't tell the whole story, but they are VERY objective (ie, not just about speculation).

The Origin numbers from games 2 + 3 are really in Hayne's favour - he didn't make a mistake in either game. Generated 2 linebreaks off his own back; busted 21 tackles (!! Slater and Inglis were second with 14 each) and ran for 100m more than anyone else over the 2 games.

If you put Thurston or Lockyer on the Blues, they're half a chance to win the games.

It's easy to compare Hayne and Slater directly, but one guy (Hayne) is playing on a half-baked side that is only half right on the selection front and has never had the full complement of props (until game 3) or halves (in any game); the other guy is playing behind a dominant pack and running off 2 dominant ball-players and feeding the inside channel of a dominant linebreaker (Inglis).
Switch the 2 players and you don't change the result of the Origin series at all except perhaps to give Qld an even bigger winning margin.

I really don't understand the Hayne hate this year - sure he hasn't broken the line 2-3 times per game like he did at the back end of last year, but he's still been the best FB in the comp

Also funny that Hayne has the most meters per kick return in the entire NRL - and that without as many linebreaks as last year?

Sooo - if he's making the most meters per kick return SURELY that means he's getting to the ball to pick it up and run it back BETTER than anyone else?

Hayne got over him there also , do you remember he brought Shillington down 1 on 1 near the end of the game
