Chelsea leading race for Ballack
By Simon Austin

Ballack is a free agent in the summer
Chelsea are the hot favourites to sign Michael Ballack, according to the Bayern Munich midfielder's agent.

Michael Becker told BBC Sport: "Nothing has been signed, but there will be ongoing contact with Chelsea. There is strong interest from both sides.

"The trend is in this direction (to move to Chelsea).

"Michael had initially been very keen on Real Madrid. But the leadership changes there in the last few months mean we don't know what's happening."

Michael will continue his career with a side that will win the Champions League

Real sacked coach Wanderley Luxemburgo in December last year and their president, Florentino Perez, stepped down earlier this week.

Becker said: "There has been a change in the whole set-up at Real and we don't know where we stand - it's very confusing."

Ballack, 29, will be a free agent in the summer when his contract at Bayern Munich expires.

An Italian newspaper claimed on Thursday that the player's representatives had held talks with Inter Milan.

Should Ballack join Chelsea?

But Becker rubbished the story.

"Michael will continue his career with a side that will win the Champions League," he said.

"He definitely will not go to Inter Milan. He would only move to a club where he has a better chance of winning the Champions League than at Bayern.

"Inter are currently third in Serie A, whereas Bayern are top in the German league."

if this happens it will be a huge joke. ballack into the cherlsea squad and they become even more invincible.

everyone is entitled to go after ballack but the cash chelsea will throw at him will be to much for most clubs.

Is it Chesea's aim to stockpile every world class midfielder going around?

Maybe they should focus on luring an elite striker, something - the only thing - they seem to lack.

They seem to do a great job of halting the promising careers of the next big thing. Its been downhill all the way for Damian Duff and Shaun-Wright Phillips the moment they put pen to paper.

SWP shouldn't have ever left City - He'd be England-ing it up now if he stayed.

I heard Jose Mourinho was chasing Guus Hiddink...Willing to pay top coin too! Apparently he needs someone with a keenly acute sense of tactics to tactically cut the tips off his post-coital cigars every time he's done making love to his own reflection in the dressing room mirrors at halftime.
