Here's an interesting question

I've been having a few bets with my mates about this.

I'd like to know who was the first guitarist to invent/come up with the distortion sound. Now im thinking of the lines of Jimi Hendrix, or someone in the mid to late 60s where rock music started to get heavy. But Im not exactly sure. A lot of heavy rock bands have been successful with it.

Does anyone know?

Possibly.

Even the beatles were experimenting with these things early on.

Basically any band that tried to over load thier speakers would in some way get a distorted sound.

From memory;

pete townsend (the who)and his old man used to get the blokes who made his amps to build them with distortion.
(Early 60's ...Jim Marshall from Marshall amps).
At the time amps where just clean sounding.
