HIA - Storm find another way to rort the system

Watch tonights game

Munster hit - lies down radley gets 10 in the bin but no HIA.
Paps - looks like he is out for 2 mins or so....comes back on after HIA
Grant - gets a head knock, trainer comes out, no HIA scores a try and sets up some great play then goes for a HIA.

All free interchanges

If the NRL are serious about concussion they have to get it right. It was laughable

No surprises who though

I don't know if they rorted it, I mean rads did hit him high. I do get the feeling they binned him because they thought Munster was going off for an HIA.

Can't remember the Grant one.

The paps one was the worst. He was out cold at which point you dont need a HIA to see if he is concussed. If he passed a HIA after that then they need to review the HIA process. I don't think it makes a difference to the result but they did an absolute disservice to the kid for sending him back out there.

The way the HIA is dealt with by the NRL is an absolute joke.

You can't have a player knocked out, come back on to the field. You can have a player clearly knocked in to tomorrow, unable to stand, then stand and start the diagonal run off balance held up by opposition player, sent back in to the line to continue play.

I get the trainer runs on and does his BS assessment, gives the thumbs up and all is supposed to be good. But it isn't.

Add to this, you have clubs rorting the HIA system by indicating a HIA (tap on head) when the trainer just clearly examined their ankle and it makes a mockery of the rules.

Take it out of clubs hands, and have an NRL doctor there watching the game, and if there is an incident and the doctor states the player must come off, thats it! Not saying all HIA must be approved by doc, but these glaringly obvious ones need to be taken straight off for assessment for the players own health.

Paps' big problem was his shoulder, not the head. Just ask him. :D

NRL to review Storm HIA calls as Papenhuyzen wins battle of fullbacks

The NRL will review the Storm’s decision to keep Cameron Munster and Harry Grant on the field after both suffered head knocks in Melbourne’s 20-4 win over the Roosters but did not undergo head injury assessments.

Roosters star Victor Radley was sin-binned and placed on report 13 minutes into Friday night’s clash after collecting the head of Munster, who flopped to the ground.

But Munster was given the green light to immediately return to the field, with the Storm’s club doctor deeming a HIA was not required.

After the game, Roosters coach Trent Robinson questioned whether sending Radley to the sin bin was the right call given Munster immediately returned to the field.

“[Radley] got 10 in the bin ... and then [Munster] comes back on 30 seconds later,” Robinson said.

“It looked like a guy who got knocked out, so should it be 10 in the bin? That’s up to the refs to explain that.”

Harry Grant, who ended up being the hero of the night, also remained on the field without a HIA despite looking dazed after a head clash with James Tedesco in the second half. He was later pulled from the field after playing multiple sets.

NRL boss Andrew Abdo said the game’s chief medical officer would examine the decisions.

“Our CMO will check all the angles and footage and see if there were any markers requiring a mandatory HIA,” Abdo told the Herald.

The Radley binning came as Ryan Papenhuyzen was undergoing a HIA after suffering a head knock just five minutes into the game.

Colliding with Josh Morris’ forearm, the 22-year-old was dazed and only regained his feet after a long pause lying on the ground.

He was taken off for a HIA as his game looked to be over, but passed and return to the field.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said he lost count of the head knocks but said all players pulled up well post-match.

“I wasn’t quite sure how many replacements we had there at stages, so it was a little bit hard to keep up with but I haven’t heard anything serious,” he said.

Papenhuyzen ended up winning the battle of the fullbacks at AAMI Park. The flying fullback sprung up from injuring his knee to score Melbourne’s second try on the back of Jahrome Hughes’s opener to safely put the game in the hands of the Storm. Grant then scored their third to put the game to bed.

Tedesco came into the spotlight too late, putting in a perfect kick to Matt Ikuvalu in the dying seconds of the game to score their only try.

The pressure of the game also led to a litany of errors in the first half with the Storm finishing with 14 errors to the Roosters’ 15.

The already-depleted Roosters will now be sweating on the fitness of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Siosiua Taukeiaho, who both failed to return to the field after injuries.

Waerea-Hargreaves could be seen clutching his arm as he went up the tunnel in the 45th minute while Taukeiaho broke a rib in the physical game.

Before kick-off, the Roosters also received a huge blow with Brett Morris a late omission due to calf tightness. He was replaced by Ikuvalu, but will likely return in time for round seven.

Update: Ryan Papenhuyzen has passed his HIA & returned to the field. Out of interest, loss of responsiveness (lying motionless on ground) is deemed a Category 2 symptom, which requires a player to be removed from the field for a HIA. Is not a Category 1 symptom (automatically ruled out)

Obvious concussion concerns for Ryan Papenhuyzen after direct blow to jaw, but secondary to this is impact injury to point of shoulder (more for AC joint sprain/burner, hope no collarbone fracture). Currently off for a HIA #NRLStormRoosters

This isn't new, you have teams telling players to pretend to be hit in the head around their scheduled interchange, then the more serious aspect of having a player smashed in the head and somehow passing a HIA.

The docs who passed those guys tonight should be under scrutiny.

Papenhuyzen got absolutely f**ked up in that collision.

If papa was that good concussed imagine what he would have done to you with a clear head lol. Sin bin was due to him nearly taking the guys head off, nothing to do with effect.
Grant wasn’t concussed, he was back playing fine after the hit.

Lol well what is a category 1 symptom? Failing to breathe?

Further to what I was saying above. If the NRL has a doctor their viewing the game live. And the doc identifies a serious concern for a player clearly knocked in to tomorrow and rules that player must come off for a hia, the 18th man should be allowed to join the game if that player fails the hia.

No need for sin bin reqiurememt in this instance.

Munster was either acting or he got knocked into next week because initially he looked like he was gone for the 10 count and I have no doubt that is what motivated the ref to send the Roosters player to the bin.. he goes to sideline, comes straight back on

Teams will take advantage of everything they can in what is labelled as "a very even comp"

Also lol @ that headline, "Papenhuyzen wins battle of the fullbacks", he had minimal impact on that game, it was all Harry Grant and the Melbourne forwards

Not true, I have no doubt the effect it has on the player makes a big impact on the referee's decision making, Dearden got hit late and high in the Brisbane game and it looks like the Penrith player will cop 3 weeks for it but because there was no play acting or anything like that, not even a penalty

Does a player who undergoes an HIA need to remain off the field for 15 minutes? I thought that used to be the rule, but doesn't appear that way any more.
