There have been a few posters on here crapping on about Hilfy getting a shot in the Test side while writing Bracken off immediately.

Well, from what I've seen this summer Hilfenhaus is a long, long way off playing Test match cricket.

He has been an absolute liability in the ODI side, being belted all over the place.

Discuss.

I think we have to remember he's always been more successful in the Shield than the FRC. The problem with him in ODIs IMO is that he bowls too much length, which would be fine with the red ball in a Test situation but after the swing goes off the white it tends to result in boundaries. I certainly wouldn't be writing him off as a Test bowler based on a dozen One Dayers, just like Bracken shouldn't be written off (even though the morons we have selectors and their chromosomally challenged brethren on here seem to have done so) based on his few Test matches...

In Test he won't have fear of pitching the ball up to swing it, whereas in ODIs hes trying to keep the runs down and also fear of losing his spot. He has shown he can bowl the back of a length to maintain pressure when the swing has gone. Will have to wait till he actually gets a go in the Test arena before we can judge him.

He is far more suited to the longer form of the game, from memory his record in Shield cricket is far more impressive than his FRC form.

So how come he hasn't been given a Baggy Green yet? Or do you think he'll get one in Johannasburg?

I've been saying he is not an ODI player ever since he started playing ODI's

as to whether he is a test player, I doubt it

He looked a really impressive talent two years ago when Tassie had their ground-breaking season, but he's been seriously underwhelming since then.

Injuries haven't helped, but he's seriously gone backwards in ability since 2007.

he hasn't been a liability, he's still taking wickets here and there but he is definately suited to the longer game ... his assets are the bouncer and the fuller ball that swings away, neither can be properly utilised in an ODI

and it's getting boring

he just doesn't seem to swing the ball as much as he used to

I doubt he would be effective with the red ball

if you don't like opinions why do you bother with internet forums ?

Potentially the best test match fast bowler we have.

Cannot not be properly judged until given a go in the Ashes (hoping he'll do an Alderman 1989 style).

Hilfenhaus has been showed up badly this series.. I wouldn't take him to England as he would just waste the new ball.

For a swing bowler he doesn't pitch the ball up enough. Bollinger looks to be our only swing bowler that does this.

He went ok. Was unlucky at times and his inexperience showed at others. Deserves to fight it out with Dougie for the swing spot on the Ashes tour

Very disappointing debut series.

If our next series was anywhere other than England, he'd struggle to get a look in.
