Okay, I really don't know where to begin but I'm f**king scared to death right now.

On Wednesday night I had unprotected sex with a girl that works with me, yes I know it was stupid, but the next day the lymph nodes under my right arm and beside my right elbow were swollen and slightly painful.

Now I know that swollen lymph nodes are an early symptom of HIV, amongst other things of course. However, with the quick research I've done about HIV, apparently the virus doesn't spread through your bloodstream until at least a week later.

Here's the big coincidence, I also have an infection around the nail of my right middle finger which has been there a few days before the unprotected sex happened. So I'm thinking that could also be the reason for the swollen lymph nodes, as infections cause them to swell up as well.

I have a heap of questions;

So is this just a scary coincidence and it's really just because of my finger or is it the unprotected sex?

Is it possible to contract swollen lymph nodes only a day or two after the unprotected sex?

I did finger her with my right hand, now if there was a cut somewhere on my fingers would that allow a possible HIV virus to reach my bloodstream quicker hence why I have swollen lymph nodes within a few days and not a whole week or two?

From what I've read, it's hard for a test to come up HIV positive within an 8 week period, but I'm still going to see a doctor ASAP and get tested but I just thought I'd share my story here too and see what advice some of you can give me.

It's highly unlikely (albeit not impossible) to get HIV in the manner you outlined. That said go see your doctor and organise a test in a months time. Try not to have sex or share any needles in the mean time.

Whatever it is its not HIV. HIV kills you by destroying your immune system, this takes time, you're not going to start seeing symptoms like that in days. You're also fairly unlikely to contract it through normal straight male to female sex if you're a guy (unless if course you were taking the tradesman's entrance).
Of course unprotected sex is never a smart idea and there's all sorts of other things you could catch, so see a doctor and rubber up next time.

You said you have done research , but clearly you haven't.

Hiv normally takes 4 weeks or more to begin replicating rapidly, this is the acute phase, normally people will come down with flu like symptoms, nausea and possibly a rash, lasting a number of weeks before symptoms subside(your body's immune response fights off the acute infection) a lot of people don't even have any symptoms in th acute phase. Other things they may happen if you get cold sores you may get an outbreak, also warts.

Normal hiv serology is useless in the first 4 weeks post exposure as it is normally not able to be detected. This is why a second test is done 12 weeks later.

There are blood tests that can detect hiv even a couple days after exposure but this is only usually done by the blood bank if you are donating blood.

As has been said the chance of you getting it from a chick is unlikely. Even if the chick is known to have HIV there is only about a 1 in 1000 chance you will get hiv. Even receiving anal sex from a hiv positive man your chance of contracting hiv is about 1 in 100.

If I was you I would be more worried about chlamydia or herpes.

I didn't think it would be HIV but there's always a chance so I did get a sense of panic.

I've self-diagnosed my finger with Paronychia, as that infection has grown it's swollen the lymph nodes on that same side.

My advice though, never f**k a girl that you're going to see everyday at work. Shit gets weird.

As CH said there's other things I'd be more worried about that HIV realistically. I got the clap off a girl I had drunk bareback sex with, fmd it was like pissing chunks of cottage cheese dipped in acid. f**king horrible.

I went through HIV paranoia last year, my advice is to stop reading articles about it and working yourself up into a frenzy and go see a doctor. The chances of you catching HIV from even having unprotected sex with a woman that you know has HIV is pretty slim. So the chances of catching it from just a random girl, especially if just vaginal, then I wouldn't worry too much.
