Hoffman will get first crack at No. 1

I'm quite happy to have Hoffman start at fullback but he needs to produce and exceed his best to keep his position. His attack and involvement as a modern day fullback needs to lift to nrl standard meaning he needs to learn to pass, draw and pass and chip kick. He should understand the play and how to make a play. Forget being a battering ram. Hoffman is more a running back than anything but he doesn't have speed, step or size to be a strike weapon at this. The short passing play through middle of the ruck on tired forwards is a good play but kick returns or in general play he should just be a link(extra man). On kick returns with no chance to pass he should run to open space not straight and hard. But most of the time he should look to pass.

Hoffman demonstrated his potential in 2011. Great footwork, very evasive and a safe defensive fullback.

Last year injury cruelled him. Playing through pain and adversity takes practice and he had plenty of practice last year. He will only improve this year.

I agree with an earlier post. Hoffman has told us he's a possibility of playing 5/8. We'll let's see the variety in attack.

14 games is about right, he actually played 16 but was injured in two of those games. When he wasn't, he was among our best, particularly in that clash against the Cowboys at Dairy Farmers where he tore them up.

Beale was very good too and potentially could be better than Hoffman but I thought he lacked the urgency, positioning and defensive capabilities of Josh in 2011. With that said, his try saver on Zillman was fantastic. One of the best in club history.

Latter half of 2012 which included some abysmal performances.

However, before then he had some good if not great performances (eg. vs. Souths R3) and those shouldn't be thrown out with the bath water.

I don't know why he is starting once again he offers very little in attack and unless he has improved very much in the off season which I do not believe we will be seeing the same old Hoffman and I think Hodges should be starting full back and I believe he would do such a great job just like GI is doing for souths.

Hodges is much better than Hoffman at fullback. My only worry is that who would we put at right centre. Reed, Copley and Maranta don't exactly scare the opposition. But I guess you could say the same about South's three-quarter line with Inglis at fullback.

My problem with Hodges at fullback is his positioning.

That final against the Dragons back in 06 was very brutal. There's a reason why Bennett moved Hunt back there for the Knights and half the Dogs game.

I'd stick with Hoffman at first but if he continues to dish up drill then it's time to give Hodgo a shot.

Why give him another shot he has already had plenty shots and even lost the fullback spot at one stage last season.

I would go as far as saying give capewell a go over hoffman at least he offers something in attack.

Which half of the Dogs game did Hunt play at fullback? It must have been the first half since Hodges kick started the greatest 2nd half come from behind victory in a finals game with his set up for Berrigan's 100 metre try.

I agree with this. If Hodges plays fullback it leaves us too weak in the centres. Anyway we need Hodges to play at least 20 games + finals if we are any chance at all this year. He is a better chance of doing that from the centres.

Long term I think one of Hoffman, Maranta, Kahu, Bond needs to make the fullback spot their own. There is potential there, but that's all it is atm, potential. It's risky but we don't have many alternatives.

And please not shitwell in the side... He is a great QLD cup player, and that's as far as he goes.

Maranta with a bit of guidance would make a great fullback

Not afraid to throw himself into the action
Still pretty quick
And can tackle

Just needs guidance

Man some of you guys are blind on here just going around in circles.

How many times did we complain about Hoffman last season and the season before and asked for change.
Now the same people are coming on here and backing him.

He is not Hunt and he will never be Hunt.

The best option at fullback is Hodges he can change games he is our marquee player and I am sure he could do the same job GI is doing at souths.

I am sure also we can find a decent centre to put in, I hear that Kahu kid is a real talent and is starting in the trails just major injuries have been holding him back last couple seasons.

Inglis is bigger, faster, stronger and less injury prone. Most importantly, he is younger and will give Souths another 6 years of service (probably).

Hodges would make a great stop-gap for a year or two - but then we are right back to where we started.
