Away strip edict for clubs
By Greg Denham
February 2, 2006

THE AFL will make it compulsory that all clubs wear alternate away playing strips.

The league yesterday informed club chief executives and marketing managers that they must provide an alternate away guernsey to avoid clashing with similar opposition colours.

Under the heading of updated commercial operations guidelines, a letter from AFL general manager of commercial operations Gillon McLachlan was sent to the 16 clubs.

In part, it read: "The AFL has taken the position to mandate that all clubs must have a main playing uniform and an alternate playing uniform."

It is understood that clubs must provide two uniforms from this season.

While AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou previously tolerated jumper clashes, it was his preferred position that clubs used commonsense to make alternate arrangements.

But the league never previously enforced the change, mainly due to pressure from Collingwood, which has vowed to never wear anything but its traditional black-and-white strip during the premiership season. Richmond has also baulked at an away strip, as has Essendon.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire is overseas and was unavailable for comment last night but he has been opposed to the idea.

Richmond chief executive Steven Wright last night said the Tigers had been "historically opposed to wearing an alternate jumper".

Meanwhile, Hawthorn has lured Team of the Century ruckman Paul Salmon back to the club.

Salmon, who won two best-and-fairest awards with the Hawks in a 100-game career in the middle of 224 games with Essendon, is Hawthorn's new part-time ruck coach.

About time too i say! This will make Eddie spit chips  but i for one think its long overdue. I mean if Soccer teams, with long and respected history can do it then there is no reason that Eddie's mob and the rest should be exempt.

Good man.

The Richmond jersey is just that, the Richmond guernsey. We support a team that wears a black jersey with a yellow sash down the front. Our jersey does NOT clash with any other teams, so I fail to see why should be forced to wear some twinkie like alternate jersey which would most like be of a gold variety.

The AFL are going to struggle to bring this in. The clubs (Richmond, Collingwood & Essendon) will be creative in how to get around it. For example, Collingwood with their black back and white back. Richmond could do the same in pulling the sash off the back of the jersey. There is no specification that the jersey has to be significantly different, just different.

I am most disgusted for Essendon though. As much as I loathe them, one thing they should be proud of is that in their entire VFL/AFL history they have only worn one jersey.

For what it's worth, the AFL should piss off and let the proud, traditional clubs wear whatever they want too.

The away team wears white shorts, the home team colored. There is absoloutely no reason whatsoever, to force clubs to wear poofy alternate designs.

& I couldn't care less what the EPL, NFL or NRL do.

I think the Richmond jersey clashes with every other clubs jersey....especially with that wooden spoon stuck to the left hand side of the jersey just under the season date of 2006 :p *chile runs off and hides behind Barry Hall*

Fans don't have to do anything.

If you like the alternative strip you buy it, if you don't like it you just stick with the conventional home gear.

I'm always skeptical of the hyper-capitalist marketing machine, but its not as if we're talking about essential products here.

Given you're insinuating we'd be the only team with that on our jersey ... Wouldn't that make our jerseys distinctive :?:
