McCrone back at seven for Raiders

6/07/2010 2:47:14 PM

Josh McCrone will return to the team in his preferred position of halfback this weekend, for the Raiders match against the Sea Eagles at Brookvale oval on Saturday.
McCrone played in the Queensland Cup last weekend, but has shown Raiders coaching staff enough from his performance that he’s ready to come straight back into halfback against Manly.
An excited McCrone said he needed to go back to the Queensland Cup and work on some aspects of his game and said he’s looking forward to coming back into the side as halfback.
“It’s good to be back. The match for Souths Logan on the weekend was what I needed to get some confidence back and hopefully I can bring that back to the Raiders this week,” McCrone said. “I’m happy with the way I played up there and I think I took more control and this was an area I wasn’t at my best in first grade so I’m happy to be back with a chance.”
The Raiders will also welcome back their State of Origin stars David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, while Travis Waddell will start at hooker this weekend for the injured Glen Buttriss who is set to miss 3-4 weeks with an ankle injury.
Raiders Coach David Furner McCrone was ready to come back into the side at halfback, while he expects plenty of minutes for hooker Travis Waddell.
“Glen Buttriss will be out for a few weeks so Travis Waddell gets his chance to start, while Josh McCrone played well on the weekend for Souths Logan so he comes back in,” Furner said. “We may look to use Adam Mogg on the bench as a utility player, but the bench hasn’t been finalised yet.”

I don't care how far off ready he is, it's time to give Sam Williams a go.

I don't see the point of McCrone. They came out today and admitted we don't have a halfback ffs.

Mogg was a disaster , McCrone wasnt killing it before so i dont see nothing changing. We will continue to play left and right and McCrone will park himself out in the centres

McCrone’s no superstar, but I’d have him any day of the week over Mogg at halfback.
This year’s Raiders are the dumbest team I’ve seen. Plenty of effort, but dumb options. Kicks into the in goal and the ball rolling over the dead ball line. Bombs that are a metre too long or a metre too short. Blokes kicking with no support runners. Running the ball on the 5th tackle and getting caught. Kickers not in position on the 5th tackle. Limited set plays. The list is endless,

I'll record the game and then flick through it later if they win.

I have better things to do with my time.

The makeup on your right hand side with Thompson and Harrison is great - they just dont get any quality ball.

Same with Croker - great centre who moves well but doesn't get quality ball.

I used to enjoy watching you guys play because there was alot of ball movement between the forwards then these big fast backs.

It depresses me now watching how well your forwards go forward and then seeing how inept the halves are..i cant imagine what it is like for you guys who actually follow the Raiders.

I wouldnt be surprised if shillington and TLL go looking for another club.

I mean i dont blame them, the forwards are doing the hard yards and there is just no playmaking going on what so ever.

Should just take a punt on Williams, we are going no where atm. And for the love of God, get rid of that split halves combo!

I haven't seen anywhere near enough of Williams to know what he's like, but I personally don't think our problem is the player who is wearing #7, it's the structure of our team. Whoever gets put into the 7 jersey will have a poor game in our current style, especially a young kid, it could in fact ruin him.

We need to change the way we are playing before we look at blooding a rookie halfback.

Williams and McIlwrick will both be given their chances in 2011.

I believe they aren't up to NRL "physically" yet.

Makes you wonder how Langer played SOO in 87 with a smaller build when clubs sprout crap like that. :x

Wish we had a coach like John Cartwright.

No halfback? Fine, time to stop pretending what we have works and chuck a 16 year old in there.

Surely there is a old scheming 7 playing bush footy somewhere down in Canberra?

McCrone looks to me to be mentally incapable.

Just say to yourself Adam Mogg at halfback...repeat it three times, and ask yourself why?

Langer could play half as the game wasn't as professional back then... That and, while he is a bit of a dick IRL, he has a really good footy mind and ability to read the game and work out what is needed PLUS direct players to do that...

I reckon McCrone might go alright if not for the left-side/right-side halves thingo. You're the only team in the NRL that does this, is it any surprise your attack is struggling so much? It's far too predictable.

You want your 1, 6 and 7 to move around between sets to create an overlap.

With the halves at the moment, you CANNOT do any second-man plays, which are the bread and butter of every team's attack. All you can do is put a kick in and hope for the best. That isn't good enough at NRL level.

Like I said, you could have Lockyer and Johns as your halves and it STILL wouldn't matter because they'd be stuck either side of the field.

That was something that we did really well at the back end of 08. Since then its slowly disappeard to the extent it hardly ever happens.
