What is the significance of the date of Australia Day?

Canada day, formerly called Dominion Day, is July 1, the day in 1867 when we became an independent country. We don't celebrate it quite the way the Yanks do July 4 though.

BTW, some Yanks say today, Super Bowl Sunday, has become practically a US holiday.

Here's one I know Aussie won't have:

<h1 align=center>Township of Beardmore, Ontario </h1> <table cellspacing=5 cellpadding=5 width="100%" border=0> <tbody> <tr valign=top> <td> <h2 align=center>Snowman </h2> <center> </center></td></tr></tbody></table>

It's not - as one Aussie on the BBC said - the day Australia celebrates the day it was discovered.

Now, if I remember correctly, it's a celebration of when Arthur Phillip and thefirst fleet of convict ships discovered the harbour a few miles to the north of Botany Bay, which had previously (By Captain Cook) been recomended as a place to start a colony.

Sorry Steve, but Australia has snow fields too... I'm sure I saw some joker
puttingone of those on top of a pub.
Reckon the Kiwis would have few though.

Australia Day (or Invasion Day as it is also known) was the day when
Captain (and Governor) Athur Phillip landed at Sydney Cove and planted the
flag of Britain.

The First Fleet of 11 ships formed the first Europeansettlementat
Sydney (almost called 'Albion') where Circular Quay now stands.

The residents, mainly convicts spent the first day (26th January)setting up shelter and on the second day, the women came ashore. Governer Phillip proclaimed it a day
of Ron Cooting and some say the 27th was the real day of celebration. :)
