Manly sack Hopoate after judiciary ban
Tuesday March 22, 09:11 PM

Manly has sacked John Hopoate after the NRL judiciary suspended the controversial winger for 17 matches on a referred striking charge.

Hopoate's turbulent NRL career is effectively over with no NRL club likely to hand the 31-year-old Tongan a lifeline.

Sea Eagles chief executive Paul Cummings said the decision was made in consultation with Hopoate, his manager Wayne Beavis and the Manly football board.

"Given the player's previous record, the board of the club was left with no alternative but to take the action it did following the charge of striking imposed on Hopoate by the NRL's Video Review Committee," Cummings said.

"The decision reached is unfortunate for both the player and the club."

Beavis read out a prepared statement on behalf of Hopoate, saying the controversial former Test winger deeply regretted the outcome of the judiciary hearing.

Another cowardly decision (or non decision) by the NRL

Obviously there needs to be separation of powers between the executive and the judiciary (even though the perception at times is that no such separation of powers exists) but on this occasion the NRL should have just torn up his contract for bringing the game into disrepute.

Does the NRL actually act on any issue?

There was the Bulldogs thing in 2002 but since then.......big silence on everything.

Nothing done over the Newcastle tarts issue either.
