I'm amazed we continue to compare ourselves to them.

If you don't compare yourself to your competition then who do you compare to? They get large crowds, we want to get large crowds. We have to know how they get it.

I think we compare rather favourably

I purchased for the Roosters @ $95 for 5 games

So a 10 game pass would be approx $170 (allowing for discounts for greater number of games attended)

Tigers 6 game pass is around $120 I think.

Its a lot cheaper when its one big stadium with huge crowds to mitigate costs...
Think of the cleaning, cooking, security, transport et cetera requirements of a stadium. If you can do it in bulk, it is a lot cheaper.

This is something I'd expect the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs to exploit as crowds get larger due to membership drives. These are the two clubs most likely to be able to offer cheaper memberships because they are operating out of ANZ. Once they crack say 10k memberships, they can start reduce membership costs because there are more being sold. Also, having a guarenteed payment for playing in a particular stadium regardless of crowds also will help.

Clubs playing out of SFS will also benefit from this sort of oportunity.

They are the best positioned teams to benefit from this. On the back of memeberships, NRL crowds will be going up to average around 22k across the league by 2015 if this spreads across the league. This is an intentional consequence of the NRLs member drive.

Good times a head I think. We just need more money spent on some of our suburban grounds.

All those prices for the VIC based clubs are just for general admission entry to games (some very good gen. admin. at MCG, nose bleeds at Etihad).

Reserved seat memberships cost at least another 100-150 more for ground level seats. Most clubs have membership packages with premium reserve seats for anywhere between $600-$900.

Even though the NRL looked at the AFL's successful membership program and decided to do the same thing? ;-)

One thing I will say, is that it is difficult to compare the prices of Aussie Rules memberships, with Rugby League ones because of the differences in ticketing/AFL management of the ticketing allowing clubs to offer memberships that gain entry to their away games.

This is something that I'd love to see clubs do in Sydney particularly, rather than the discount. There is more encouragement for you to pay your own club to attend their away games than to pay the opposition club.

I'll admit, I probably wouldn't attend as many Richmond away games in Melbourne as I do if I wasn't able to buy my 17 game ticket but because I do splash out for the membership, I ensure I do attend to gain value from my ticket.

From what I've seen of the Tigers rates over the last 2 seasons + next, the Storms past rates, and what I read on the other thread regardng Dragons GA memberships, I tend to agree. There is exceptional value in some of the packages.

If you don't compare yourself to your competition then who do you compare to? They get large crowds, we want to get large crowds. We have to know how they get it.

It's an extremely sh*tty game to watch on TV.

If it's pissing down in Melbourne, and you can go sit undercover at the 'G and watch your team play, there is still encouragement to do it as your viewing experience is greatly enhanced by attending the game.

Conversely, for a sport that is supremely suited to television... if it's pissing down in Sydney and you have the choice of say standing on the hill at Leichhardt, Brooky etc or watching the game live on tv, what are the non-die hards likely to choose?

One of RL's great strengths in it's tv viewing experience will always be a negative when looking at crowd attendances, particularly for the games at the traditional grounds.

It is amazing how many people become season members in SL. Even though their crowds are smaller generally their % of members in the overall crowd is huge. At my old club we avg a crowd of about 8,500 and we sell about 7,500 season memberships. Taking into acoount away fans in the avg gate that is nearly every home fan attending is a member!

The Roosters had a membership last year where you could get into the Souths and Bulldogs home games at ANZ. I think it was reserved seating im not sure but it's a good incentive and it would be good if all Sydney clubs had some sort of membership where you could get into other teams home grounds.

The reason the AFL get so many to games is because it is a vastly better spectacle live compared to TV. That and the fact that getting to the game and getting a good seat is cheap and easy in Melbourne. You can easily spend more on your first shout after the game than on your ticket and transport costs.

For instance:
Day ticket for trains and trams $6.10
General admission to Olympic stand at MCG $19.90
Four pints at Y&Js $28.00-$32.00 depending on the type of beer.

Now I will argue that the Olympic stand is the perfect place to watch AFL because it is right on top of the play and your reasonably close to the non-existent half way.

Now compare that to the SFS:
Parking at Moore Park because public transport in Sydney is sh!t $15.00.
General admission ticket $23.00.

With that General admin ticket I have to sit past the 20m line meaning that I have to squint at the big screen when the play is up the other end of the field (at Bruce you can buy a category 2 ticket that is behind the try line and not undercover for $35.00. Yes $35.00 to watch the raiders in a sh*t seat).
But at least I'll save on my first shout because I won't be drinking at any pubs after the match, I'll be stuck in traffic for the next hour trying to get out of Moore Park.

Well my point here is that the experience for the non-ticketed AFL fan is a lot better than it is for the non-ticketed Sydney NRL fan. This is why so many people go to AFL games.

Yep. An Eastern Suburbs Metro line would help massively in this regard. On the Metro website, they have a plan to build a line there once the first step (the Western and city lines) is complete. But thats at least 20 years away. NRL gets shafted because NSW governments have been sh!t for 50 years (also their sporting ground management plan is an absolute joke as well)...

The only hope on this matter is that the Soccer World Cup might get the government moving on this sort of infrastructure...

Pricing of sydney transport is crap too, and the entire system isn't intergrated and doesn't work together...

Having seen how well London, sh!t even Melbourne Rome and Paris' rail networks work really puts Sydney to shame. In some ways, this city is 50 years behind the rest of the world...

At least the new Western Metro goes to homebush and the roselle-city line terminates at Balmain Leagues...

Disagree on Melbourne's rail being better - In sporting terms, we just happen to have the sporting precint sitting next to 3/4 of the train system... Ignoring that & Sydney has a much better system in terms of it's reach across a number of people than Melbourne's does + a much larger fleet of modern trains than Melbourne does. The system is also operated in a much smarter fashion - Melbourne's trains ALL terminate in the city, and go back where they came from, whereas your system up there has the majority of lines running through the city. One late train in Melbourne can screw the entire system up for a day.

On a possible Eastern metro - Is there plans for a station nearish/or even at Moore Park?

Thinking ahead, if Australia won the world cup, which would potentially result in the SFS being rebuilt to hold up to 60K + a Eastern Metro running past the precint - That would be an awesome result for Sydney RL fans.
