Look at the current ladder. Aussie conference is the weakest - exacerbated by the Brumbies underperforming.

NZ are next with the Chiefs underperforming and the 'Canes stop/start efforts.

SA are the strongest conference with the Cheetahs best season to date being the difference.

Despite the rankings the Crusaders and Stormers are still the two sides to beat. On their day the Blues or Reds can beat either of them.

if you actually understood the system you would realize that while sides like the chiefs and canes are lower on the table... they have to play the tough kiwi teams twice.

you wanna look at the strength of the NZ conference... the two bottom NZ sides have just beaten the top Aussie side & South African side over the last fortnight...

the canes beat the top Australian side(reds) a couple of weeks ago and the chiefs just beat the top South African side(stormers) on the weekend.

The South Africans have the hardest local derbies and are naturally the toughest tour. Now that the Lions and Cheetahs have learned to win away they might be the strongest for a while.

Scores and ladders are kept for this purpose. Subjective arguments hold no weight.

Bottom 4 teams.. 1 SA and 3 Aus .. Aus clearly the weakest confrence... goes a long way to why the Reds are top.
Bottom 6 teams... 2 SA , 3 Aus, 1 NZ...
Bottom 8 teams... 3 SA, 3 Aus 2 NZ...

Clearly the easybeats are in the AUS and SA confrences... making the NZ conference the strongest.

I think the conference system is flawed. I think it favours top heavy conferences, the reds are pretty good but whether they deserve to come first is debatable. But it's not as if the best team won't win anyway, i just hope there's no minor premieship as NZ & SA teams are disadvantaged. But the new finals system is good for ratings i guess with every country guaranteed representation in the finals.
