Interesting article in today's NZ Herald:

if he things we screwed up expansion
he should have a look at the VFL's efforts , certainly their latest ones
they have completely F'd their comp.;-)

& yawnion in this country should be looked at too for some serious scrutiny re expansion into non heartland areas
they have waste of space franchises everywhere .....

this is just league bashing & nothing more.

Not to mention the string of elite soccer franchises which have fallen over in recent times.

I got bored halfway through. Load of dribble. Apparently the issue isn't that Sydney teams are too weak, as most QLD nuffies on here will gladly tell you despite years of mediocrity from QLD teams, but Sydney teams are too strong. Well. That's settled then, perhaps we need more Sydney teams to dilute the power a bit

Rattue

I think he's contractually obligated to write a positive piece on league twice a year to at least appear balanced, but the rest of the time I'd put money on finding Big Foot before I'd put money on Rattue writing genuinely positive things about league.

Interesting article in today's NZ Herald:

The most interesting thing about it is that this bloke either hasn't got a clue what he's talking about or more likely in my opinion he is intentionally ignoring facts to throw more mud around.

BTW I don't get his point, what difference does it make if some of the expansion teams aren't very successful on the field at the moment, the two most successful teams off the field in the league are expansion teams and most of the other expansion teams are quickly overtaking the majority of Sydney teams.

As the other Kiwis have said, Rattue is a tosser. After the first All Blacks/Wallabies game of 2008 he proclaimed that no matter what happens afterwards that game proves that Dingo should be All Blacks coach instead and right up until the RWC final he was going on how Dingo was going to win.

I'm guessing a Union hack who has little idea about what the game has had to put up with over the last 17 years and totally ignores the new era dawning for the game.

I do agree about the Warriors though, they should have a massive membership, big crowds and the pick of NZ talent giving them a formidable squad.

Having said that union seems to be struggling in NZ as well looking at some of the poor crowds s15 draws.

The 3 major expansion club dynasties have been driven by a core of young Queensland talent going to the same club.

In the mid 1980s, it was the Raiders (Maybe they chose the Raiders because they didn't want to play for a NSW club? *shrugs*).

In the late 1980s it became the Broncos as they finally got the chance to stay put and play against the top NSW clubs.

In the 2000s it became the Storm.

I don't know exactly why it's happened this way and whether the same reasons have driven this each time, but it's either a curious trend or a total coincidence.

Watch out if Perth becomes the club du jour for talented young Queenslanders when they enter the NRL!

Probably because there has been ltd NRL options for the many qland jnrs to stay in qland, same reason there are so many kiwis in Australian teams.

Melbourne has shown that if you want to successfully expand the game you have to invest.
INVEST??????? More like f*cking BLUDGE!!!!!!

Ron McAuliffe made playing in the BRL comp conditional on playing Origin. He relaxed that to include Canberra, because - in his f*cked logic - Canberra was OK because it wasnt in NSW.

He's happy to point out that a lot of things haven't worked (duh), but he undersells the successes of teams like North Queensland, NZ, and even the Storm in various areas. The Cowboys and Warriors are both well supported, and the Storm are (as he says) a true dynasty.

He doesn't offer any reasons for the failings, or solutions for them. A lot of hot air.

The issue appears to be that only half of the NRL teams can make the finals each year. Brisbane miss the finals for the second time in 20 years and there's a serious problem. Either the Warriors or Cowboys look likely to scrape into 8th place. The Raiders will miss the finals due to the culture that appears to permeate the club and city, that elite footballers can do as they like.

Every team cannot make the finals. For every Melbourne or Brisbane who make it almost every year , there is a team, most likely a Sydney team, that hardly ever makes it. It's not an even comp, but most of the advantages lie outside Sydney.

What a BS article. To prove how poor expansion is going he takes an expansion team out of the stats on making/winning GFs.
