Usually I like to precede each AFL season with a more in-depth discussion on each side, but outside commitments mean I won't have time to prepare extensive dossiers on each side this season. As such, I thought it'd be better to lead-in to the new season with a brief view of each side, inviting anyone else who may be interested to give their contrary slant on it.
Adelaide is first-up, by virtue of alphabetical order.
STRENGTHS: Look very fit and had a superb run with injury in 2005, with both of these factors helping them to win the minor premiership. For mine, Adelaide has the best defense in the competition, along with solid ruck stocks and a very capable midfield. I like the way they play the game, blending energetic run with a sound dedication to defensive workload. They also picked up a couple of likely prospects in the draft and have a very good youth contingent to supplement ageing warriors like Riccuito and McLeod.
WEAKNESSES: Up forward things don't look overly flash, with attack clearly the side's Achilles Heel. That being said, McGregor, Hentschel & Burton may well be the most underrated forward trio going around. They do appear to be "up" very early and it remains to be seen what effect this will have later in the season. It will also be interesting to see how the side copes if it has a less than brilliant injury run.
PREDICTION: The Crows will almost certainly make the eight and I wouldn't be surprised if they emulated last season.
