How will CARLTON fare in 2006?

STRENGTHS: Probably harder to identify than for other clubs, but its not all bleak at Princes Park. We are seing the first signs of a strong youth base developing and given the weaker than acceptable state of the Carlton list, you'd expect players like Murphy & Kennedy to get plenty of opportunity early as a means of fast tracking their development. Up forward things don't look too bad, with Fevola, Waite, Betts & Lappin providing the basis for a respectable attacking quartet. In a less tangible sense, Pagan has had a few bad years, but I doubt that he has lost the capacity to surprise.

WEAKNESSES: Overall, the club is clearly struggling due to a lack of quality across the park. The club looks very weak in the ruck (although McLaren will help here no end), and anaemic in the midfield where Bentick & Stevens offer plenty, but the well pretty much runs dry after that. Kouta remains a fine player, but he is well down on where he was several years ago, and given that he is still Carlton's best, it doesn't augur well for the club in the short term.

PREDICTION: The Blues will need a lot to go their way to escape the bottom four. Most are pencilling them in for the spoon, although it is worth noting that no club has won back-to-back spoons in a decade. Its also worth keeping in mind that the club did finish tenth with much the same side 2 years ago.

Spoon favourites! They got thrashed with their full side against Port! A miracle if they avoid the spoon!

A lot of work to be done out Carlton way but has started with last years draft in promising youngsters in Murphy and Kennedy.

Best : 12th

Worst : Dead set last

Murphy is a weird one! I just don't think he is like Deledio. He is so inconsistent and his kicking is woeful at times. If you are banking on him this year to deliver for the Blues you are struggling!

Carlton are truly sh*t and it's great to see. The best thing to see is their financial woes.

Anyone who has seen their club go through difficult times and seen the usual Carlton response to their troubles just has to giggle at the mess these dogs are in.

Their playing list is utterly terrible and honestly, their finishing range on the ladder will be anywhere from 16th to 16th.

I'm not 100% convinced that the Blues are spoon certainties.

Its true they enjoyed a fab injury run last season, which doesn't augur well for them.

Still, in Fevola, Lappin, Waite and Betts they have a quartet that can be very strong up forward, assuming they can get these players on the paddock and get an even share of the ball.

They will surprise some sides.

Will struggle to win a game! Lappin can't do it on his own, Fevola is usually terrible!

Usually terrible? he had a shocking season last year and still got his 50+ goals.

Jarrad Waite is also coming along nicely, for mine, across half forward.

9 in every 10 footy tragics told me that Hawthorn wouldn't win a game last year and would get thrashed most weeks.
