How will COLLINGWOOD fare in 2006?

STRENGTHS: Collingwood has the raw materials available to form a strong attacking unit, with Rocca, Didak, Tarrant, Fraser & Cloke all capable of providing a bit of scoring grunt. The club was criticised for its early draft choices, but I think Thomas will settle in to the top side quickly and provide extra forward spark. The club also has some solid types down back and probably retains much of the work ethic and stubborn character that led the side to back-to-back Grand Finals in 2002 & 2003.

WEAKNESSES: The ruck and midfield options on offer for the club are just about the weakest going around. The club clearly lacks legspeed and while this is an over-rated commodity, it can have a firm impact in sides that lack depth of talent. For mine, the defense is weakening by degrees, and the fast impending demise of the ageing Wakelin will hit the club hard. I've spoke about the potential forward power, but its also true that Collingwood fans put too much stock in inconsistent players who were largely at their peak a couple of years ago.

PREDICTION: Forget the finals talk, the Magpies aren't good enough and will finish somewhere in the bottom half of the table.

A potent forward line with a solid but not spectacular midfield and an aging backline.

Best : Fringe top 8

Worst : Wooden spoon

After watching them pre-season, I'm pretty confident of a place in the top 10, maybe even the 8.

The skunks strongest side can make the 8. They have a serious drop off factor once injuries set in.

Buckley is the as always the ultimate key, the just don't have even an adequate replacement for him, if he goes down with injury again, they won't play finals.

If they can keep the majority of the other top 21 players on the park most weeks they are a shot at finals. Any serious injuries to their midfield even outside of Buckley will hurt them though.
