I got a mate who is one of those who thinks League ends in the Sydney and Brisbane suburbs to watch the Ch9 broadcast of Huddersfield vs Hull KR..

Thinking they are up there on ther ladder and at a great stadium like Galpharm, I'm thinking like at LEAST 15,000....!!

What happened..??..Does the ESL actually promote these matches...??

They have more season tickets than turned up to the game on Friday, averaging about 9k this year. All crowds seemed to be down this weekend for some reason.

Hudders at one stage were getting crowds around the 3/400 mark when they were hopeless, this team hasn't won anything for 50+ years.

This year they are averaging 8,843

2008. 7,820
2007. 7,087
2006. 5,898
2005. 5,383
2004. 4,362
2003. 4,722
2002. relegated
2001. 3,739
2000. 3,392

http://www.slstats.org/t7/Huddersfield Giants/

This year they have had no crowd under 6,000, yet in 2000, they only had 1 crowd over 6000.

In 2005, they had their first crowd above 10,000 for generations and they only got above 10k once.

Last year they had 3 crowds above 10k, this year they have already had 3 crowds with 10k+ with half the season to go.

They are growing each and every year and once they start winning more often then not, their crowds will grow too around double what they have now.

this club is def on the move and will be knocking on the Big four's door very soon.

The other week Parra v Cronulla drew less than 8000. Don't the NRL promote these games?

the sad thing is... the NRL doesn't

Gallop expects the general public to stay informed through telepathy and to turn up in droves with virtually no promotion....

I'm frequently confused that many UK fans don't realise they are not the Hudds of a few years back. Many seem to still labour under the impression that they scrape by on 4k average crowds, and that they are a poor team who their own side should always beat at a canter.

It is not so - and has not been that way for quite a while now! They are a very solid team, with pretty decent home support.

And they're going to get even better, IMO.

For most UK Super League teams, other than the big 4, an average gate around 10,000 is extremely healthy.

In all honesty, League in the UK plays a very poor 2nd fiddle to football almost everywhere it is played.

Even Warrington, a town that doesnt even have a football team, only has a stadium that can hold 14,000 when fully sold out.

Back to Huddersfield.....

Huddersfileld Town are in the 3rd division of English Football and get gates of anywhere between 12,000 when playing teams like Carlisle and up to 21,000 when Leeds came to visit (although Leeds would have brought at least 7,000 fans). Their average gate is about 12,000.

Huddersfield is a football town. It has been for some years. The fact that the Giants have stuck in there and are building a supporter base once again is actually a great story for League.

Of the "big four" Bradford will be struggling to average 10,000 this season and Saints only just manage it despite being the most successful team in the SL era. Hull will beat 10,000 despite one of their worst seasons in SL.

^^ This is correct.

If your in Australia you could not comprehend just how big Football is in this country. This is not a go at Australians so please don't take offence.

In Warrington, as is rightly said above there is no football side (well there is but its in division 8). Despite this the biggest two clubs in the town are Manchester United and Liverpool FC. When there RESERVES played each other at Warrington the other year the crowd was 10,500. That is bigger than most of our Rugby crowds!! Hence most youngsters with an ounce of sports skill play Football not Rugby. Hence our less than world beating national team.

From what i can tell, the closest thing in Australia is Melbourne. Imagine running in the league in Victoria only. No players from NSW or Queensland. Then you have the situation in England.

Hodgson has been going alright, one of Huddersfield's better players. Fulton has played 3 games, two off the bench. I'm still not sure why he has been brought over, Hudds have better options in every position he plays.
