Alot of the NRL referee's were there. Also the brought in the video ref. That was about all that was good about it.

Though it was even easier to get a seat at Penrith then now and we were good so another positive I guess

Didn't the Hunter Mariners play in a world club challenge against another Aussie team o_O

Yeah they played the Broncos at Mt Smart Stadium

Newcastle was simply not big enough for 2 teams and there was that hate for Super League.

When Super League folded the players from the Mariners and Perth Red more or less was the core squad of the Melbourne Storm's founding squad.

That shows the sheer genius of SuperLeague, Newcastle Vs Brisbane played in Auckland.

Give them a break, demand would have been overwhelming in Hong Kong with billboards of ET & Phil Adamson up everywhere.

Ah the infamous World Club Challenge. They fixed the draw to help the pom clubs so the Blue Sox and Paris got lapped by 70 each time yet still finished ahead of Australia clubs who won all their games. One of your best Reebs.

Memories of Hunter? Saturday afternoon footy on ABC. Mariners, 10 spectators, Debbie Spillane, does it get much better.

I think it might've been a pre determined venue situation

It was pre determined, just like the GF played in Brisbane was.
Something obviously got lost in translation because the Warriors didn't make the WCC final.

Looking at the 1997 World Club Challenge results and tables its no wonder why people thought it was a massive farce.

Bradford, lose all 6 of their games on -146 point difference and somehow make the Quarter Finals while 6 Aussie teams, who won at least 4 games each and 5 other European teams who had more wins (1) or a better point difference missed out.

SL played 18 won 7 lost 11
Biggest crowd 7,700 lowest 2,190
Stadium topper capacity 11,000

Quite amazing that a team that was so detested in Newcastle still attracted 7,700 fans to a game ! How did that happen. Family and friends would only be 100 odd !

Maybe the Knights didnt play that weekend?

There were a few ARL split rounds that year.

Just on the Mariners, I remember a photo which wouldve taken in 1996, where they had Noel Goldthorpe on their first signings and also Michael Hagan.

But what was Hagan's role in the Mariners? I know he only just retired from the game but certainly didnt coach them.

You do realise that lots of free tickets were given out. I remember my family got heaps of them in promotions in the mail, as well as other vouchers to McDonalds etc. We never went to any of the Mariners matches. And yes, they were very much hated by the majority of Novacastrians and Newcastle press (who were mostly pro-ARL).

No surprise the Mariners had the lowest crowd average of the 10 Super League teams - 5,413 - which was just over a third of what the Knights got that year in the ARL - 14,257 (2nd highest of all the ARL teams, to Parramatta)

Interesting stat: back in 1997, the Mariners were offering the Knights money to use their stadium, as well as completely renovate the whole ground (which would've cost $3 million). To think that the Eastern Grandstand cost nearly $30 million alone to build nearly 10 years later, it puts the monetary value into perspective. But as I said, the Mariners and Knights were competing against each other and the Knights were never going to allow the Mariners use of Marathon Stadium.

Penrith won 6/6 including beating Bradford x 2 (54-14 for one of them) and failed to make the quarters. That is an incredible record we get to hold onto. :) also shows why NRL vs SL WCC on even terms will never work. With the recent salary cap rises, the gap will widen, not narrow.

don't disagree re the impact the salary cap difference is going to make int he future of the two comps but you have to realise back in 1997 only Wigan and Leeds were FT prof clubs, the rest of the UK/French SL clubs had been mostly part time up until that year.

Haha that made my night. Penrith 6 from 6 and missed the finals. Hilarious

Yeh soccer is equally stupid, two German teams playing a champions league final at Wembley. Oh hang on its sold out!

The 97 WCC final drew 10k. Outstanding result for a final of a major competition.
At that stage, and still today, the demand to hold such an event in Auckland is not there (unless the Warriors are a participant)

And yet a GF or SOO can fill a stadium for two out of town teams. Holding a final for two out of town teams in a neutral venue is successfully done in many sports. It's about the game having legitimacy, SL is not a great era to judge the success or failure of anything due to the feelings about the game at the time.
