I think they were worried about not doing enough to warn the populace of the threat, especially when a Category 1 Katrina killed a few people in Florida.

I guess they'd prefer 'Cry Wolf' to having blood on their hands.

HURRICANE Katrina...A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED STRENGTH...RIVALING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANE CAMILLE OF 1969.

It was a very powerful hurricane, especially by American standards. I guess the 'unprecedented strength' part relates to the relative strength of the storm. The Hurricane Camille thing was chucked in as another cry wolf statement....apparently (I wasn't there, lol) Camille did quite a bit of damage and killed hundreds of people, and has the same mythological status amongst the Yankees as Tracy does for the people of Darwin.

MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.

Mostly correct...if you insert the word 'damage' for 'failure'

If that happened today we'd say "FANTASTIC!", however back then it would've been seen as pretty average. This is why, although current oil prices are an outright record, when they are adjusted for inflation they would still have a way to go to match prices for much of the '70s. When the Oil Shocks first hit in 1973, crude went from $3 a barrel to $11 in a blink. In plain figures, today that would be like dropping your kebab at a Bulldogs game- nobody would hardly notice. but if you adjusted it for inflation, that figure would be huge, and the economy would lose out majorly.

That is what I'm saying. Oil prices are high (even for the current economic climate), however even though outright prices were lower in the 70's, proportionately they were higher than they are at the moment. Oil prices would rise gradually over time anyway, irrespective of what else was going on in the world. The same reason most goods cost more than they did 30 years ago, but (especially in the case of electronic goods) they are relatively cheaper.

have been watching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina all afternoon & the devistation is absolutely incomprehensible.
Some quick stats:

* New Orleans mayor fully expects the death toll in New Orleans alone to run into the thousands (possibly many thousands)
* 80% of New Orleans underwater - 15-20 feet in places. Two levys broke in the city inundating the entire city with flood-water. Massive engineering problem in trying to fix the levys. There are massive, massive holes under the water where the levy's broke.
* Thousands of people wandering/swimming around the streets of New Orleans with no home, nowhere to go, no possessions.
* Looters running rampant in New Orleans....riight in front of TV cameras. Police pretty much just letting them go at it. #1 priority is rescuing survivors first. Police have no communication to call for backup. Gangs of armed looters on the streets. Police allowing looters to walk away with stuff. For example....they are letting people steal shoes that fit them...not shoes that don't fit though! Sounds crazy!
* MASSIVE public health crisis looming within the decrepid flood-waters. Threats of typhoid, tetnus, & West Nile Virus (via mozzies).
* Rescuers told to ignore bodies & just go after survivors.
* Fires breaking out in the city & the fire hydrants are not working.
* 25,000 people being transported from New Orleans Superdome to the Astrodome in Houston. The Superdome has no power, air conditioning, (the heat index in New Orleans was almost 40 degrees today) the toilets are overflowing & it is cut off by flood waters.
* Actual discussions about whether they will rebuild New Orleans at all.
* Early estimates about the length of time it will take to get rid of the water from the city stands at 3 to 6 MONTHS!
* Fleets of helicopters airlifting people from the rooftops of their houses.
* Water up to the roof pitch on thousands of houses.
* 80 miles of beach along the gulf coast has been completely destroyed.
* Hundreds of people stranded on highway overpasses with no water or food for 2 days now.
* There is no clean drinking water in New Orleans at all.
* Mississippi is absolutely devistated also. Entire towns completely & utterly flattened....no buildings standing.
* Oil rigs displaced in the gulf.......one was washed some 66 miles & smashed into a bridge
* Floating casinos washed ashore & totally destroyed - state losing $500,000 a DAY on gambling revenues.
* Refineries shut down - gas $3.00 a gallon nationwide & expected to hit $4 a gallon (it was $1.09 a gallon when i arrived in Texas in 2002).
* Biloxi, Mississippi - it's not a search & rescue operation anymore. It's a "bag & tag" operation now.
* 22,000 National Guard Troups have been mobilized...thousands more waiting to go, but not sent yet due to the lack of communication available....they don't know where to send them.


Soooooooooooo many more stories & stats....these just off the top of my head.
I have NEVER seen or heard of anything like this before. Journalists & relief workers that were covering the Tsunami said that this looks just like it.
All this just 570 miles from my city on the Gulf of Mexico. And living here it's never a question of if a massive hurricane will strike....but when.

Third, the saints of God watch for the return of Christ. The worse this world becomes in its institutionalized iniquity, the greater the hope that the return of Christ is nigh. September 11 was comforting evidence to the saints of God that every word of the Scripture is true and that our hope is a good one. "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them." Romans 1:18-19. "And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not." Revelation 2:21. Furthermore, it validates what Westboro Baptist Church has been preaching since 1991: This nation (and world) has crossed the line. It's too late to repent. God will send adumbrations of the Great Assize (September 11 was child's play compared to what is coming), and the vile people of this world will ignore the warnings. That's what the Bible says will happen. That's what WBC has preached will happen. And that's what is happening.

I’m not going to post the piece I started to write.

My original reaction to the Katrina catastrophe was going to be: “NOT ONE DIME.”

For an hour or so, I contemplated the idea of turning it into a crusade: No-one in the blue states (where the money is) should give one dime of aid to the victims of this hurricane, which devastated Bush-friendly regions.

Why did I flirt with such a callous attitude?

Because it should be obvious to all that this tragedy was not just an act of God. Dubya and his diety conspired to transform mere disaster into an unprecedented mega-catastrophe. ...

So why was I thinking of starting a movement against giving aid to the stricken areas?

Because these are red states. They voted for Bush. These ninnies obviously wanted these policies, and they deserve to live with the consequences of their votes.

A large part of me still believes that many of these W-worshipping numbskulls deserve to suffer and to die. They brought it on themselves. Let them look to Jayzuss for aid: It’s time they stopped leeching off the more productive blue staters.

(Californians stupidly give much more to the federal government than we receive from it; the money flows in a very different direction in the red states.)

So, at least, I started to write. But then (to paraphrase the old song) I thought I’d better think it out again.

Many of the victims, the ones who have suffered the most, are poor. The hardest hit were the blue state folk living among the red state maniacs. New Orleans, we should note, went heavily for Kerry.

And that’s why we must help. Although it was very tempting to say otherwise.

But let us make one thing clear: We WILL politicize this issue.
