Looking at Italy's results and their team line-up, I am at the conclusion that they play a 5-2-3 formation.

Am I correct or what?

No actually, they play a interesting 4-2-3-1 formation which looks something like this (at full strength):

Buffon;

Panucci, Cannavaro (c), Nesta, Zambrotta;

C. Zanetti, Gattuso;

Camoranesi, Totti, Del Piero;

Vieri;

----------------------------------------

However Totti was absent in the last two games (against Serbia and Wales) and therefore Trapattoni went back to a 4-4-2 with Vieri and Inzaghi up front and Del Piero right out on the left, a position he played in his younger days.

They also have Miccoli and Cassano, probably the two most exciting young talents in Italy, waiting to burst onto the national team (Miccoli has already played) so their attacking options are endless. Just to name a few:

Totti
Del Piero
Vieri
Inzaghi
Miccoli
Cassano
Delvecchio
Montella
Corradi

I had never seen a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Here was the Italy line-up against Wales:

Buffon, Panucci (Oddo 58), Zambrotta, Zanetti, Cananvaro, Nesta, Del Piero, Perrotta (Fiore 85), Vieri, Inzaghi (Gattuso 74). Subs (not used): Toldo, Legrottaglie, Corradi, Delvecchio.

That was why I asked.

Also how do you rate Italy u-21 'keeper Amelia and AC Milan 'keeper Dida? Because I rate Didi very highly.

Amelia is class. I have seen him play three times with Italy U21 and he impressed me alot. Will find it hard to get ahead of Buffon, Toldo etc. when his time comes though. Italy just have so many good keepers.

I dont rate Dida much at all. He has been in good form lately though, but i would be starting Abbiati for Milan.

my team used to play the 4-2-3-1 formation. my coach (a rep-level coach) thought that it would suit our game and our players to play this style

a minor premiership, premiership and 2 state trophies in that year showed everyone why he was the coach

Man Utd are starting to develop a 4-2-3-1 formation as well, with Keane and Butt (or Djemba Djemba or Kleberson when he's fit) playing as the '2', and Scholes, Giggs and either Solskjaer or Ronaldo behind van Nistelooy.

exactly!

it promotes attacking football while also giving the safety of having a 4 man defence, although 2 of them are wing-backs) and 2 men in front of them to repel the counter-attack

why stick to a formation?
why not interchange like brazil, madrid etc?

Good point.

For certain games im sure managers change their formation, but stability is also required, so this can go both ways.

Madrid did play a 4-2-3-1 though didnt they??
