Now of course I don't normally watch Rugby Onion, but I stumbled across this on the sports news ...

Anyone see the Wellington Lions NPC team in their special one-off commemorative jersey the other night?

Hmmmm ... looks strangely familiar doesn't it ......

Whoever signed Canterbury as our jersey supplier should be shot. We need to ditch those unimaginative template lovers and get ourselves a jersey that actually means something other than a generic corporate symbol.

GIVE US A REAL JERSEY PLEASE!!

Err.. the Wellington one is a variation of their away strip and a one off designed by Neemia Tialata and the proceeds are going towars the tsunami relief fund.... Tialatas involvement was mainly due to his villiage being one that was completely destroyed.

Both Auckland and Wellington Rugby Unions have worn similar jerseys to the Vodafone Warriors (VW) this year but to be fair Wellington wore the same style last year. VW management knew what teams in competing markets were wearing and headed down that path anyway. Taken on a global scale it's not so bad, but in NZ's tiny market? Pathetic.

It doesn't come across as Canterbury copping out and palming off identikits even if they do take a cookie cutter approach. I can only presume that they do what their clients ask and the client should object if what they are offered is inadequate. Teams wouldn't wear cloned jerseys if there was some genuine association with a rival team. It simply shows Warriors as a corporate billboard devoid of genuine identity and showing little aesthetic regard for a region or a sport's history.

At least the Wellington RU normally have traditional colours and proudly represent their locale in their name. Although with the one-off jersey and being referred to as the Vodafone Wellington Lions there's a warning for them in the example set by by the VWs. They best heed it.
