KingLing's right, Craig Stevens will pull out for him, Stevens will get a spot on the 4x200 relay team as compensation.

The powers that be will convince that Craig guy to give up his spot. If they don't, I'll eat my hat.

Thorpe was disqualified and thats the rule.
No way should that other kid craig stevens ? have to give up his spot. He earned that fair and square. It's unfortunate Thorpe didn't qualify, but tough luck.
So everyone is whinging cause Thorpe is the best and would have won a gold medal. There's more to life than winning

I am quite passionate on this topic being that I previously have been a competition swimmer.

Ian Thorpe was competing in an event to receive qualification to further represent Australia and compete and defend his title in the 400m event at Athens.

The way I look at this is that Australia should be selecting the most capable swimmers to achieve this. By disqualifying Thorpe over a ridiculous rule that was only set by FINA to keep the `meets' moving along and on time does not make any sense to me whatsoever.

Screw the damn rule! They should have run the race with Thorpe in it. This is a selection meet to decide which are our fastest swimmers to represent our country!

As an Australian I want the best possible athletes as representatives of Australia.

ian thorpe is a true aussie legend for sure. i dont think any aussie in here could say that they dont cheer him on when he's in the pool?

i'm pretty sure that as far as elite athletes are concerned, theres nothing else but winning foremost in their minds.

I don't know much about it but . . .

The selection process should pick out he best swimmers to represent australia at the olympics. If it doesn't then there is something wrong with the selection process.

I ahve to agree with PK.

Being an ex competition swimmer, the rule is there for a reason, to stop swimmers from jumping the gun and getting an unfair advatage on the rest of the field. In other words cheating.

There was nothing that Ian Thorpe did that could be even hinted as cheating, or trying to break first, he simply lost his balance and was disqualified on an technicality.

Same as our cyclist (forget his name, he was only 18 at the time), his foot came out of the pedal and he was disqualified on a technicality, cost us a gold medal.

They should revert back to the 2 false start rule with all sports, even athletics.

Now we have a situation where the current world champion, record holder and current gold medalist, will not be allowed to compete, just becuase he fell off the blocks.

How stupid is that ?

i disagree with PK
so f**king what if he is a world champion, he f**ked up and needs to learn to live with it
Here is a young kid being put under all sorts of presure to give his earned and deserved spot up, the olympics isnt about winning and losing for mine, its representing ones country and IMO the rules are the rules, so what if thorpe dosnt win a 1000th gold medal, that kid deserves his place

The rule is stupid yes, but would such things been considered if it were stevens that was Dq'ed? NO, thorpe is a great swimmer but it would be against the australian way IMHO if he was given special treatment just because he is Ian Thrope
