Well its not like he really needed a good start. He shouldn't have put himself in a position where he over balanced and fell in.

That was pretty bad news for the Thorpedo but I think rules are rules and as sad as it is...just think about Craig Stevens for a minute. Here is a guy who has been also training his butt off for years and do you think that if he has made the Olympics that he is going to give away the chance of a lifetime? No way and really I think most of us would do the same thing.....hes busted his guts to get there and why should he give up his opportunity when he may never get it again.....I think this guy has lots of feelings too and with Thorp being Thorp......he might just say "OOPS" and get over it all......he is pleased for Craig Stevens anyway....spoke to my sons swimming teacher about it today and she said rules are rules as well and its just the way it goes....maybe they should just change the stupid rule then.....they are both good sportz!

They will find a way to get him in, now tht he is a memebr of the team, cause he won the 200 free last night.

Its up to the Australian management, and they want him in the team.

less gold medals for australia

1 less silver.

Grant Hackett is a special to win the gold, unless he gets dq'ed at Athens.

Of the top 10 times of all time, Thorpe has the fastest 7, Hackett the 8th, and Thorpe 9 & 10. No other current swimmer is in the top 15.

Craig Stevens does not deserve his spot. If he swims he will not even make the finals, he is only there on a technicality. This is not even his strongest event.

He will be in the team as he will finnish second to Hackett in the 1500 and he will get his 15 minutes of fame (or in his case 16 mins and 20 seconds), at Athens.

This meet is the Australian selections and why would not you send your strongest team.

Its the Olympics for god's sake not a just another swim meet.

The Australian selectors are obligated to to send the strongest team. Its their job to select the best team and I believe that's what they will do.

Exactly Twizzle. Not everyone knows the rules or facts so i imagine it will be harder for them to see where it is wrong.

Hopefully they can get around this and get Thorpe into the 400m. He was never not going to be at the Olympics in my mind. I am questioning the FINA ruling and why it should make the defending champion, who has not lost form in anyway, lose the ability to defend his title for his country.

Its not a FINA ruling, its Australian only and our selectors can decided who they want to send. HAs nothing to do with FINA or the IOC.

Being buaurocrats they normally use the Aust titles to see who will go, they are currently trying to find a beauratic way of getting Thorpie in the team.

It's a shame with what has happened but I can't argue with the rules - no matter how harsh they seem to be. Ian Thorpe has accpeted the decision, Craig Stevens should not give up his spot.

The story should end here.
