Watched Gary Freeman carving up. Forgot just how nippy the Wiz was. Ellery Hanley was other worldly. Loved watching Cliffy Lyons the other day. Easily my favourite player of that era. He was an amazing ball player. Deceptive and on point time in time out. His line break assist stats would be incredible.

Saw the 1985 playoff (Penrith v Manly at the SCG), which went to extra time after being 7-all at full time.

If golden point existed then, Manly would have won as they scored first to lead 7-6 - Greg Alexander kicked two penalty conversions later in extra time hence the 10-7 win.

Penrith's maiden finals appearance would have actually been in 1989.

I'll never forget how Cliffy ran them around in circles in the first half of the 1987 GF. Unstoppable. O'Connor dropped a pass cold when he just had to put it down over the line because Cliffy had already dummied about 6 times in the same movement. Genius with the ball.

They showed the Canberra v Easts 87 semi final this morning. The Manly players (who were already into the final) were at the game and the camera cut to them and I swear Noel Cleal was smoking a joint. I mean it could have been a cigarette but the way he was handling it it looked just like a joint. Cliffy was sitting next to him. Great stuff.

I liked the way they just got on with it.
Defensive structures may have been no where near as good, but the tacking was very good.
Sometimes the player was slower on to the ball but the play the ball was fuss free and the scums just happened.

Big difference, there were 26 footballers on the field not 4 or 5

I remember a final Manly v Raiders in 1991. Most of Manly rep players were injured and Cliffy almost single-handedly beat the Green Machine. Yet another 'clanger' at a crucial moment from Bill Harrigan denied them. These blokes never did weights and smoked a durry at halftime, just very naturally gifted footballers from the bush.

This is what made it so great in my opinion. Nobody pays to watch structured defense. That side of the ball does not bring in the coin. You just want your team to survive in defense. Defense should be about individual effort.
The game was great in the 90s because teams had learned how to attack against a 10 metre rule but not how to defend. I think they should make a massive change to the defensive rules every 10 or 15 years purely to mess up the comfort zone of structured defense.

Yes I remember that. Cliffy from memory put Kevin Iro over, and Bill came up with a horrific phantom forward pass.

You're quite right. Gifted footy players. I always remember Ben Elias as a grub, but this morning I was reminded how amazingly talented and skilful he was.

I disagree with this. Good defence is great to watch. I would much rather watch a team trying to score against a team that is great at defence then watch a team score at will because the other team can’t defend to save their lives.

Hated Elias as a player. We feared him in Qld. He could turn any game. Like his charge down in the great final vs Souths in 1989.
Noticed in these old games that Elias and Walters were very good at winning possession by striking at/ raking the ball back during the play the ball. Not sure why they got rid of that rule. Didn't seem to hard to police for the ref, marker simply had to be standing square.

Elias was the key in the 1990 Origin series. Easily best on ground in game 1. Then was also the key in the amazing Test 2, 1990, GB v Aust. He was inevitably Balmain's go to player in the late 80s, early 90s. Great at all levels.
