Kenny would run rings around JT. True running five eighth.
Was Kenny better to watch than Thurston?
Loved watching Cliffy Lyons the other day. Easily my favourite player of that era. He was an amazing ball player. Deceptive and on point time in time out. His line break assist stats would be incredible.

Defensive structures may have been no where near as good,
I remember a final Manly v Raiders in 1991. Most of Manly rep players were injured and Cliffy almost single-handedly beat the Green Machine. Yet another 'clanger' at a crucial moment from Bill Harrigan denied them. These blokes never did weights and smoked a durry at halftime, just very naturally gifted footballers from the bush.
I disagree with this. Good defence is great to watch. I would much rather watch a team trying to score against a team that is great at defence then watch a team score at will because the other team can’t defend to save their lives. This is what made it so great in my opinion. Nobody pays to watch structured defense. That side of the ball does not bring in the coin. You just want your team to survive in defense. Defense should be about individual effort.
The game was great in the 90s because teams had learned how to attack against a 10 metre rule but not how to defend. I think they should make a massive change to the defensive rules every 10 or 15 years purely to mess up the comfort zone of structured defense.
Noticed in these old games that Elias and Walters were very good at winning possession by striking at/ raking the ball back during the play the ball. Not sure why they got rid of that rule. Didn't seem to hard to police for the ref, marker simply had to be standing square.Hated Elias as a player. We feared him in Qld. He could turn any game. Like his charge down in the great final vs Souths in 1989.

I'll never forget how Cliffy ran them around in circles in the first half of the 1987 GF. Unstoppable. O'Connor dropped a pass cold when he just had to put it down over the line because Cliffy had already dummied about 6 times in the same movement. Genius with the ball.
