Idea...

Okay, I posted this on the greenhouse thread while back...

Idea. Like the National Youth League in the A-League, the NRL should make a rule allowing 3 overage players in to play in the toyota Cup league. Just for fringe First grade players or for players coming back from injury.

Would be great!

The better 17 and 18 year olds playing up will provide more benefit for the competition rather than dragging back overage players. The real problem there is the number of players going overseas and making the over age competition significantly weaker. Will the over age competition ever be the same? We will have to see from year to year.

The second showpiece competition has to be one that showcases as many of the best up and coming players together as possible, whether they are there for a year or three.

Good Point, but for the raiders, instead of going up to QLD every week just have 3 overage players in the team. It would benefit the U/20's to be lead by real experienced Fringe FG's

There's positives at both ends for every team, but we've seen similar in the NSW PL days and I wasn't that impressed. One question I'd have is who are teams picking? I can see problems no matter what type of player you choose ...

The over age competition plays a role, in that a half that needs some polish or a prop that need to play against men can do so. That's the direction they should be going.

I prefer to see the younger players come through and play against the players they'll be against every week in the coming years. Some of those younger players would be left out, if older players are added. Few of the players that drop down to reserve grade ever become the elite players in the competition. These top 17-18 year olds will ... and I think they will develop better combinations with the 19-20 year olds by playing together from a younger age.

There may be a small dip in talent after Packer, Graham, Coote, Friend all debuted in one year but I think the under 20s graduates this year will be more competent than they would have been without the competition structure being the way it is.
