1. Let Benji go to Rugby for a fee - let him donate it to a junior club of his choice

2. Let Bird/Carney etc have the choice - sit out 1 year or donate 50% (as a fine) of the current year's salary to a junior club

3. TV - put together a package for foxtel to sell pre-season comp like the NAB cup in AFL. Teams already play trials - lets televise them & play them all in big contry centres - Wagga/Albury/Tamworth/ etc I am sure they could sell this for enough so clubs may get an extra $500,000 per year in grants.

Maybe change format so that at least 8 u20's players feature so that the stars don't have to play extra games or make it unlimited interchange with a 25 man team.

The old Tooheys challenge worked well.

Re: number two, that would be a major backtrack to the areas where we went forward. They would easily play for half the price, how is letting them back in a way to improve the game?

Bird/Carney etc shouldn't have a choice... they break their behavioural code with their club, and their contract is torn up, with the NRL supporting the club's action. Simple.

Tough lesson to learn, but you can bet neither will be as much of a dickhead (eg Bird lying to his club, regardless of which way the trial goes) whenever they manage to land their next pay check.

ok maybe point 2 for mild stuff ups only - I just remember when I was young and stupid and the mistakes i made but what carney/bird did was unacceptable.

They wouldn't get $8 million for a pre-season comp with sub-standard games during February. They would be lucky to get $200k.

Fair enough. Don't forget before sacking Carney and Bird were multiple, repeat offenders on their last chances with their respective clubs.

For Benji, I havebn't read a great deal about it, but surely his "release" for a spell of union has to be down to his currently contracted league club to give their approval first? Players only get four "official" weeks of leave a year between grand final and training don't they? Similar to the rest of us?

Sounds like Gallop's simply told the clubs that this isn't on (for the sake fo the game or whatever), but yes, there are opportunities that could be negotiated if Benji was willing to say play league in the Pacific Islands. But it's clearly about the cash, and once we let them sign short-term contracts, the league or his club can have no say in where that cash goes.

I think the problem with the game at the moment is that we keep fiddling with the rules. Not changing them, but just playing with them. We keep changing our minds on small areas of the game, that if left alone, the players would probably just adapt to.

All these fees and fines etc... I think it just needs to be black and white.
You screw up, either the club and the NRL forgive and forget, or you're out of here.
