Wayne Bennet wants to coach in the World Cup

The 65-year-old said the new rulings won’t stop him if another nation is willing to take on the seven-time premiership winning coach, who previously helped New Zealand to victory in the 2008 World Cup.

“The reality is time is running out for me,” Bennett said.

“I had the opportunity to coach France at the last World Cup but I knocked it back.

“I went very close to taking the job but after much deliberation I knocked it back because I wanted to concentrate and not be distracted with my commitments to Newcastle at the time.

“But if something was to come up here I would be happy to help in any way I can.

“I love rugby league and that is why I helped out New Zealand in ‘08.

“And I thought the 2013 World Cup was a great event in England and I would have loved to be a part of that.

“So if I can make a contribution and help some nation that would be great.

“That is one of the reasons why I was keen on the Australian job, just to be a part of it.”

Whilst France need a lot of help the reality is England are far better placed to make an impact at the World Cup and would potentially turn into a real contender if they pick up Bennett.

If nothing else, the 'Bennett Factor' would at least help England win a few mind games.

Ideally for France, if possible for 2017, it would be great if they could get Trent Robinson. Experienced and intelligent coach, able to speak French and understands the environment most of the players learnt their trade in.

I'd really love Robbo to coach the French team. If he appointed someone to keep things moving during the NRL season and coached them during October-November it could work

I really hope a country uses Bennett as coach, wouldn't surprise me to see NZ use him as an assistant coach seeing as Kearney and Bennett coach together at Brisbane.

Robinson coaching France would be a perfect fit, He can speak French and knows the culture. A Roosters and Catalans partnership would be a logical step with young players transferring between the two clubs for experience.

It would be interesting to see what Bennett could do with the French. Coaching has always been their weakest point. Whilst being able to speak french is a bonus, it is not necessary as many of the french team have played in england and can translate to the others. Robinsons french is not that good, I doubt he ran his training at Catalans purely in french.

I would actually like him to coach Samoa. His pull might be enough for the likes of Milford to stick with Samoa. If he could convince Thomas Leulalai to switch we would finally see a pacific nation with a top halves pairing.Meningas appointment as Aussie coach scares me as I think he will try and influence dual eligible players to pledge allegiance to Australia even if they have no realistic chance of getting a jersey.Bennett's influence could be a powerful counter to that.

I have no doubt that Robinson didn't run his coaching sessions in French when at the Catalans, the fact he can at least understand what players are saying and communicate in it helps.

Anyway I'm sure any of the top coaches in NRL or even Super League could help France. Over the past few years the French have made some really average appointmentsand of course have paid the price.

A part time Bennet, Robinson, Maguire, Bellamy or McDermott would help the significantly.

Anyway hopefully someone picks him up outside of NZ (they don't need him anymore)

England are well placed one would think.
France could use him but I am just not sure it would be the best fit.
I think Australia really missed out with Bennett. The Australian Side in 2017 could be very inexperienced.
Mal I think will fail.

I'd like to see michael marrum coach png with bennett or someone similar as an advisor.

Samoa or Tonga is a cop out because it's mostly nrl heritage players.

Maybe Fiji would be good. They need help bridging the gap between domestic and heritage. Would do wonders for RL in fiji too. Is stone still their coach officially?

What about if the Walker brothers got a minnow nation? Their style of play could see an underdog rise.
